Thomas Nelson has announced the promotion of Gary Davidson as senior vice president and publisher of the company's Bible Group.

Davidson, who replaced Wayne Hastings, has more than 20 years' experience working with Christian products, company officials said. He has worked for Nelson for 13 years, leading its Christian Retail Sales area for the last eight and the company's Ministry Development and Church Direct group for the last two.

New Christian fiction releases previewed Print Email

Best-selling author Francine Rivers' first full-length release since 2003 is part of a strong New Year 2010 fiction schedule previewed to librarians by four leading Christian publishers.

Rivers' Her Mother's Hope, out in March, is the first of a two-part "Marta's Legacy" series from Tyndale House Publishers, with the second installment, Her Daughter's Dream, to follow later in the year.

Titles aimed at other than the more traditional Christian bookstore shopper were the big winners in this year's Book Cover Awards, sponsored by the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association (ECPA) and Dickinson Press.

Three of the four prizewinners announced Friday were targeted toward "inclusives," one of four broad groups identified in consumer research and those typically most open to change and cultural experiences and who are community-oriented.

GMA cancels annual industry conference Print Email

The threatened Gospel Music Association (GMA) has canceled its annual industry music conference, while rebranding the April 2010 calendar date as "Dove Awards Week" with events leading up to the prizes show, which is scheduled for April 21. GMA members were notified Thursday by e-mail.

The conference part of GMA Music Week, which included the Christian Music Retail Conference (CMRC) and music industry leadership workshops, which once drew thousands to Nashville, has faced shrinking attendance in recent years and will be retooled for 2011, GMA officials said.

Zondervan pulls book after backlash Print Email

After encountering a backlash for what critics called its insensitive use of Asian themes, Zondervan has pulled from store shelves Deadly Viper Character Assassins: A Kung Fu Survival Guide for Life and Leadership by Mike Foster and Jud Wilhite.

"There is no need for debate on this subject," said Moe Girkins, Zondervan president and CEO. "We are pulling the book and the curriculum in their current forms from stores permanently."

Christian Retailing is starting a new service that makes it easier for suppliers to get the word out to Christian retailers about their products.

We are now gathering information on upcoming releases--books, Bibles, gifts, music and DVDs/videos/software--through our new online submission service. Product information we receive through this service may be covered online and/or in print in our new-look product sections, starting in our January issue.

Warner Press is offering its specials to Christian retailers in the Virtual Christmas Showcase, an online exhibition and training event hosted by Christian Retailing magazine and focused on the holiday season.

More than 20 suppliers--including Thomas Nelson International, Integrity Music, Kregel Publications and Lighthouse Christian Products Co.--have so far signed on for the Virtual Christmas Showcase. Besides highlighting products and specials, the online event includes interviews, new release spotlights and other offers. The virtual show has drawn more than 1,700 unique visitors from nearly 60 countries since it began Sept. 30, with 7,500-plus page views.
