Forget Where's Waldo?, Munce Group is offering a supplier-inspired scavenger hunt during the International Christian Retail Show (ICRS), set for June 23-26 at the America's Center Convention Complex in St. Louis.

Available to all retailers, not just Munce-member stores, the Great Summer ICRS Scavenger Hunt 2013 is "fun, easy and rewarding," company officials said.

Tyndale Momentum, an imprint of Tyndale House Publishers, today announced that it will publish former NFL coach and NBC's Football Night in America analyst Tony Dungy's first marriage book early next year.

To be released Feb. 11, Uncommon Marriage: What We've Learned About Lasting Love and Overcoming Life's Obstacles Together will be written by Dungy and his wife, Lauren, with Nathan Whitaker. The hardcover will retail for $22.99.

In Uncommon Marriage, the couple will impart principles they have learned during their 31-year marriage. The Dungys, who have nine children, will "offer hope, encouragement and practical advice to those who would like their marriages to be better, but aren't sure what to do differently," company officials said.

"Tyndale Momentum highly values its relationship with the Dungys," said Tyndale Momentum Publisher Jan Long Harris. "We are thrilled to have Lauren join Tony to write about their love story, as well as address a question that even couples in the best marriages must answer from time-to-time: How can we make our relationship stronger?"

Uncommon Marriage will be the first in a series of marriage products from the Dungys. The trade book will be followed by a devotional and a DVD curriculum. An audio edition of Uncommon Marriage will release simultaneously.

Dungy's books with Tyndale Momentum have sold more than 2.5 million copies, Tyndale officials said. His third book, The Mentor Leader, also reached No. 2 on the New York Times list in August 2010. Dungy's fourth book, The One Year Uncommon Life Daily Challenge (2012), also made the New York Times best-sellers list.

High-wire artist, FaithWords author Nik Wallenda to cross Grand Canyon Print Email

High-wire artist and FaithWords author Nik Wallenda will seek to become the first person to walk over the Grand Canyon on a high wire this weekend.

A seventh-generation descendant of the legendary Great Wallendas, Wallenda's death-defying feat, Skywire Live, will be broadcast at 8 p.m. EST, Sunday, June 23, on the Discovery? Channel. At a height of 1,500 feet above the Little Colorado River Gorge, Wallenda, 34, will walk on a wire that is just 2 inches thick, while traversing the 1,400-foot-wide gap between cliffs. He will have to adjust to sudden wind gusts of more than 20 mph with no safety tether attaching him to his line, Discovery? officials said.

"Before I set out, I will join with my family in prayer, just as I do before every walk I take on the wire," Wallenda wrote for Guideposts magazine. "We will thank God for a gift we may not understand, but which we know we must honor. I train, I focus, and I have faith in the path I feel called to follow. I know God is with me every step of the way."

Earlier this month, FaithWords published Balance: A Story of Faith, Family, and Life on the Line, in which Wallenda recounts his lifelong journey with Christ, his battles with ego and his experiences as a circus performer. He recently appeared on NBC's Today show to discuss the book and Grand Canyon crossing.

In June 2012, Wallenda become the first person to walk a wire over Niagara Falls, which was broadcast live on an ABC TV special. Unbeknownst to Wallenda, ABC officials kept his microphone on, which allowed television viewers to hear his continual prayers.

Literary agent Lee Hough to be honored at Christys, battling brain tumor Print Email

Alive Communications Vice President Lee Hough has been named the recipient of the 2013 Lifetime Achievement Christy Award for his contribution to the publishing industry as a literary agent.

Today's announcement by Christy Awards Executive Director Donna Kehoe comes on the heels of news last week that Hough's stage four glioblastoma brain tumor, which he had battled successfully for two years, has spread.

"Lee's quarterly MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) last month was clear, but symptoms flared up recently, and another test two weeks ago indicated that, barring a miracle, he has about two months to live," Alive President Rick Christian said.

Friday, June 14 was Hough's last day at Alive Communications in Colorado Springs, Colo., where he served for more than 12 years.

"We're all devastated by the news because it is difficult to imagine life without Lee's loving, gregarious spirit and beaming smile," Christian said. "By any measure, he's a wonderful human being, best of class. And it gave me great joy to watch him do what he was so gifted at."

Hough's author clients at Alive included Rich Stearns, Terri Blackstock, Randy Singer, Elisa Morgan, Miles McPherson, Vicki Courtney and Lynn Vincent, collaborator on the best-sellers Heaven Is for Real, Same Kind of Different As Me and Going Rogue.

"Seeing him in action always reminded me of the scene in Chariots of Fire when Eric Liddell says he most feels the pleasure of God when he runs," Christian said. "For Lee, that came with being a literary agent, and, as he said in parting with tears, 'I'm finishing well and leave with no regrets.' "

Hough, who turns 58 in July, will be honored during the 14th Annual Christy Awards dinner, Monday, June 24, at the Renaissance St. Louis Grand Hotel in St. Louis during the International Christian Retail Show, which runs June 23-26.

Friends of Hough can communicate with him through his CaringBridge.com website by visiting http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/leehough.

Survey: Majority of teens prefer shopping brick-and-mortar stores Print Email
Written by Eric Tiansay
Monday, 17 June 2013 02:25 PM America/New_York

In some encouraging news for traditional retailers, more than three-fourths of teens said they preferred shopping brick-and-mortar stores, according to a new survey.

Investment banking company Piper Jaffray & Company's 25th semi-annual Taking Stock With Teens poll of 5,000 young men and women revealed that 78% of females prefer in-store shopping, while 75% of males did. The survey also found that nearly 70% of teens prefer to shop the websites of their favorite store-based retailers. Approximately 79% of females and 76% of males shop online, and respondents indicated that roughly 18% of their spending is online.

The survey also revealed that approximately 53% of females and 52% of males indicated that social media impacts their purchases, with Facebook being the most important, followed closely by Twitter and Instagram. But the popularity of Facebook is waning among teens, with only 33% citing it as the most important—down from 42% six months ago.

"Our spring 2013 survey results suggest teens have a heightened sense of awareness surrounding seasonal spending fluctuations and broader macroeconomic sensitivities," said Stephanie Wissink, principal, co-director of investment research and senior research analyst at Piper Jaffray. "Spending has moderated across discretionary categories for both upper-income and average-income teens when compared to the prior year and prior season. Yet nearly two-thirds of respondents view the economy as consistent to improving, and just over half signaled an intent to spend 'more' on key categories of interest, particularly fashion and status brand merchandise."

The survey polled teens about their spending in fashion, beauty and personal care, restaurants, digital media, gaming and wireless communication. The fashion category accounts for roughly 40% of teen budgets, consistent with previous surveys' findings.

Nearly 91% of teens plan to purchase a smartphone, with approximately 60% biased toward Apple's iPhone and 21% likely to buy an Android device. Approximately 48% of teens own an iPhone, up from 40% six months ago, the survey found. Tablet ownership also continues to grow, with 51% of teens owning a tablet computer, up from 44% in fall 2012—with 68% of teens owning Apple's iPad.

'Situation looks a lot better' in fire-ravaged Colorado Springs Print Email
Written by Eric Tiansay
Monday, 17 June 2013 12:25 PM America/New_York

CBA, several Christian publishers and authors in Colorado Springs, Colo., are expressing a sense of relief as the most destructive blaze in the state's history was nearing containment.

Nearly 500 houses have been burned and two killed by the 22-square-mile Black Forest fire, which is 65% contained after it began nearly a week ago. Crews hope to have the blaze, located outside Colorado Springs, fully under control by Thursday, the Associated Press reported.

WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group Publicity Manager Beverly Rykerd told Christian Retailing that the company's offices reopened today after closing Thursday and Friday. WaterBrook Multnomah has a staff of 45 people in Colorado Springs.

"No homes were lost among WaterBrook Multnomah's staff—praise God," said Rykerd, who was able to return to her Black Forest home Saturday night after being evacuated. "All is well in my neighborhood. The situation looks a lot better today in Colorado."

Rick Christian, founder of Alive Communications and Bondfire Books, said several employees of his literary agency, including his family, were evacuated.

"We did not close because our offices aren't in the fire zone, and so our offices became a storage place for displaced fire victims," said Christian, who lives in the Black Forest area. "While our homes are safe so far, we're surrounded by smoke and the heartache of others who didn't have advance notice and escaped with just the clothes on their backs or who couldn't reach their homes because the fire spread so fast.

"I was personally moved by the generosity of those who reached out to us," he added. "Last year with the Waldo Canyon fire, we took four families into our home. This year, those same families reached out to us in extraordinary ways. The helpers became the helped."

The Black Forest fire is located near last June's devastating Waldo Canyon Fire, which destroyed 346 homes and killed two, USA Today reported.

CBA President Curtis Riskey said no employees of the Association for Christian Retail lost their home to the fire.

"One team member was evacuated, and we had another prepared to leave at a moment's notice who lives just outside the pre-evacuation zone," he said. "We are heavily engaged today and this week in final preparations for ICRS [International Christian Retail Show, set for June 23-26 in St. Louis]."

Left Behind best-selling author Jerry B. Jenkins, who lives in the Black Forest area, posted on his Facebook page that his house was "unscathed."

"Night rain helped and firefighters are optimistic about containment within 24 hours," said Jenkins, who evacuated 85 miles to the west Friday with his wife, Dianna. "Then Black Forest moves from crisis mode to rebuilding."
