Thomas Nelson and digital Bible maker Immersion Digital have launched three new apps for the iPhone and iPad, which pairs the New King James Version (NKJV) Bible with the award-winning Glo Bible's engine.

Available in the U.S. and Canada, the NKJV Study Bible, The MacArthur Study Bible and the NKJV Bible apps feature 360-degree virtual tours, photos, animated maps, videos, social-networking features and Bible-reading plans.

"In this digital age with two entire generations born in a digital world, it is crucial to have our best Bible translations and study Bibles in digital format, not by merely mimicking paper, but by exploiting the full potential of digital media to communicate the Bible in new and engaging ways," said Nelson Saba, founder and CEO of Immersion Digital. "The NKJV and its study Bibles are hallmarks favored by millions of readers."

Immersion's Glo was voted best in the Bible category in the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association's annual Christian Book Awards in 2010. The Glo Bible is published by Zondervan, now a sister company to Nelson under the HarperCollins umbrella.

"The introduction of these new NKJV powered by Glo Bible apps will give current and future generations the ability to experience God's Word in ways they never have before," said Gary Davidson, Thomas Nelson senior vice president and Bible group publisher. "The potential for expanding Bible readership and sharing scripture through these apps is amazing, and we are thankful that our partnership with Immersion Digital is making this possible."

Jefferson book to be sold despite Nelson cancellation Print Email
Written by Eric Tiansay
Friday, 17 August 2012 12:00 AM America/New_York

Despite Thomas Nelson recently canceling David Barton's controversial best-seller about Thomas Jefferson, the conservative historian will sell the book through WallBuilders.

"We find it regrettable that Thomas Nelson never contacted us with even one specific area of concern before curtly notifying us they had dropped the work," Barton, named by TIME magazine as one of the 25 most influential American evangelicals in 2005, wrote on his WallBuilders website. "Had they done so, we would have been happy to provide them with the thorough and extensive historical documentation for any question or issue they raised; they never asked. The Jefferson Lies has not been pulled from publication and it will continue to sell nationally."

But after a group of conservative scholars claimed that Barton's take on Jefferson was factually incorrect, Nelson decided to pull The Jefferson Lies at the end of July.

The Jefferson Lies—released in April with a foreword by conservative talk show host Glenn Beck—claims to expose common myths about Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence and the nation's third president.

"We are not releasing specifically how many people expressed concerns—only that there were several who expressed concerns about the historical accuracy of the book," Casey Harrell, director of corporate communications for Thomas Nelson, told Christian Retailing. "We are not releasing any additional information other than the publishing relationship has ceased and between Thomas Nelson and Mr. Barton, and we do not expect to publish his works in the future."

However, Barton has defended The Jefferson Lies, citing Nelson never mentioned any concerns about the book, which made the New York Times best-seller list after its release.

"While Thomas Nelson may have 'lost confidence' in the work, others have not and the book has already been picked up by a much larger national publisher and distributor," he wrote. "Even at the time Nelson dropped the work, [the company] admitted that it was still selling very well."

As of earlier this week, The Jefferson Lies was still the top-selling book about Jefferson on Amazon.com, the New York Times reported. It also remains for sale on the website of WallBuilders, a pro-family organization founded by Barton that presents America's history and heroes with an emphasis on its moral, religious and constitutional heritage.

Generation Y takes over baby boomers in book buying Print Email

Taking over long-held book-buying leadership from baby boomers, Generation Y—those born between 1979 and 1989—spent the most money on books in 2011, according to the 2012 U.S. Book Consumer Demographics and Buying Behaviors Annual Review, prepared by Bowker Market Research and Publishers Weekly.

Y's 2011 book expenditures rose to 30%—up from 24% in 2010—passing boomers' 25% share.

"The book industry is operating in a new and dynamic landscape that puts much more power in the hands of consumers," said Kelly Gallagher, vice president of Bowker Market Research. "Consumers can now very easily purchase virtually any book they want, whenever they want it and get it at a competitive price. It's more essential than ever before to understand who is buying and what their expectations and habits are."

The review, which polled almost 70,000 Americans who bought books of any format and from any source in 2011, revealed that the collapse of Borders accelerated movement of book sales to online retailers and away from bookstore chains.

By the fourth quarter of 2011, online retailers' share of unit purchases had risen to 39%, up from 31% at the close of 2010. Conversely, chains' share fell to 30% in the fourth quarter of 2011 from 36% in the final period of 2010.

E-books continued to grow, rising from 4% of unit sales in 2010 to 14% in 2011. Among major subgenres, e-books had the most impact in the Mystery/Detective category, accounting for 17% of spending, followed by Romance and Science Fiction—where the format accounted for 15% of sales.

The review also found a slight dip in women's lead in book buying. Women's share of unit purchases declined to 62% from 65% in 2010, and their share of spending dropped to 55% from 58% in 2010.

Nelson pulls Jefferson book for historical errors Print Email
Written by Eric Tiansay
Monday, 13 August 2012 12:00 AM America/New_York

Thomas Nelson has pulled a controversial best-seller by influential evangelical leader David Barton because the book contains historical errors.

With a foreword by Glenn Beck and released in April, The Jefferson Lies claims to expose common myths about Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence and the nation's third president.

However, a group of conservative scholars claimed that Barton's take on Jefferson was factually incorrect. Additionally, a group of Cincinnati ministers called on Nelson to cancel the book, The Tennessean reported.

Casey Harrell, director of corporate communications for Thomas Nelson, said The Jefferson Lies was pulled at the end of July.

"The company was contacted by a number of people expressing concerns about the book, which we took very seriously," she said. "The company tried to sort out matters of opinion or interpretation, and in the course of our review learned that there were some historical details included in the book that were not adequately supported. Because of these deficiencies we decided that it was in the best interest of our readers to cease publication and distribution."

The Jefferson Lies is still available at Amazon.com and other Internet sites, but online retailers have been asked to stop selling the e-book version, The Tennessean reported.

"We are not releasing specifically how many people expressed concerns—only that there were several who expressed concerns about the historical accuracy of the book," Harrell told Christian Retailing. "We are not releasing any additional information other than the publishing relationship has ceased and between Thomas Nelson and Mr. Barton, and we do not expect to publish his works in the future."

Named by TIME magazine as one of the 25 most influential American evangelicals in 2005, Barton has defended The Jefferson Lies, citing Nelson never mentioned any concerns about the book, which made the New York Times best-seller list after its release.

"For those who may have been influenced by seeing a negative critique of The Jefferson Lies, I urge you to read the book yourself, examine its 756 footnotes and allow Jefferson to speak on his own behalf," he wrote on his WallBuilders website. "I predict that if you do, you will be persuaded by the abundance of primary source documentation and will quickly see through the shallow motives behind the critics' self-serving and disingenuous attacks."

A graduate of Oral Roberts University, Barton is the founder and president of WallBuilders, a pro-family organization that presents America's history and heroes—with an emphasis on its moral, religious and constitutional heritage.
