July bookstore sales were down to $707 million from July the previous year, dropping 5.1%, according to preliminary figures released from the U.S. Census Bureau. In July 2013, retail sales at bookstores were $745 million.

Previously, bookstore sales rose to $794 million in May, but then dropped to $702 million in June.

January-July sales this year were $5.8 billion.
