Popular artist's new album emphasizes doing and truth telling

"A lot of it for me really got started in my heart. I got on my face. And that's where everything starts. You get distracted building your own kingdom." —Jeremy Camp

Jeremy Camp is crackling with Scripture references and is eager to talk about his new album, Speaking Louder Than Before, which releases in late November. He is a multi-Dove-Award-winning artist who has four previous albums to his name, but Camp talks about this new record as if it's his first.

"I haven't been this excited about music ever," he said. "I feel like a new artist."
Camp also sounds like a new Christian understanding scriptural truths for the first time. That isn't the case, but one wouldn't know it from talking to him.

He quotes from Psalm 139, Mark 16, Revelation 24 and John 15, all in a matter of minutes. He's trying to explain the inspiration for this album, and how he has managed, at 30—middle age for a musician—to find new zeal for Christian music.

"A lot of it for me really got started in my heart. I got on my face," Camp said. "And that's where everything starts. You get distracted building your own kingdom."

In the two years since his last album, he said everything has—for the first time in almost a decade—started to settle in his life. After his first wife died a little more than seven years ago, he landed a record deal, re-married and had two daughters, all while touring and making music. Having some stability and a little time to breathe seems to have infused new life in Camp, and this latest album—a collection of mostly upbeat pop-rock songs—is the perfect "driving album," he said.

Like much of Camp's music, this record has cross-generational appeal, he said, but acknowledges that it leans more toward younger generations.
