It's unusual for readers to be asked to shape the outcome of a novel. But in a new promotion for his upcoming thriller The Justice Game (Tyndale House), suspense writer Randy Singer (By Reason of Insantiy) has left the final verdict open-ended.In a YouTube video, the case is laid out for public view via a fake cable news show and a vote can be cast in favor of one party or the other.

“There is already a lot of excitement building around this book, because of the video,” said Cheryl Kerwin, marketing manager at Tyndale House. “People really like having the opportunity to participate in the story. As far as we know, this is the first time an author has brought reader interaction to this level.”

Singer, who has been "impressed" with the response, has written two endings for the title and says of the outcome: “It’s close, but the jury’s still out.” Readers can find out the final outcome when The Justice Game releases in July 2009.

This promotion prompted me to think of other times readers would have liked a choice. What if Rhett had stayed with Scarlett? or if Dorothy had never returned to Kansas? or if Peter came back to visit Wendy (okay, we saw that one).
