Artist Ron DiCianni claims case of 'religious censorship' Print Email

A print of Christian artist Ron DiCianni's Blessed Are the Peacemakers artwork has been removed from a military base due to a complaint regarding its religious content.

DiCianni's Tapestry Productions recently became aware of the decision made by officials at Mountain Home Air Force Base in Elmore, Idaho, responding to a complaint about the art, company officials said. It was part of a collection to honor the heroes who responded to the the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

The Pentagon reportedly authorized the removal of the print, which features a modern-day policeman standing in front of a medieval knight. The flag held in the hand of the knight morphs from a medieval coat of arms into the flag of the United States. The word "Integrity" is stenciled over the image, and the verse referenced is Matt. 5:9, which says, "Blessed are the peacemakers for they will be named sons of God."

Mikey Weinstein, founder and president of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, called the Pentagon after receiving the complaint reportedly from a non-commissioned officer at the base. Within an hour, the artwork was removed.

"We are deeply saddened as we receive more information about this incident to see the apparent hostility of Pentagon leadership to a message that is clearly in keeping with the foundation of this country, the Air Force and whose communication is clearly protected by the First Amendment," said Tapestry Productions President Grant DiCianni, the artist's son.

"It is our belief that this message is one that the modern-day military should be proud to embody—the idea of integrity in the service of peace," he added. "Every war fought has been to pave the path back to peace. The military is an embodiment of the ultimate peacemaker, a pursuit blessed in Scripture. It would seem this is a message that the Air Force should be willing to foster, not censor."

Grant DiCianni noted that Tapestry Productions has not yet been contacted by Pentagon or Mountain Home Air Force Base officials in regard to the issue despite repeated requests.

Ron DiCianni has won several Gold Medallions from the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association for his book covers—which include the original designs for Frank Peretti's This Present Darkness and Piercing the Darkness (both Crossway). DiCianni's work has appeared on a wide range of prints and accessories, from Bible covers and bookmarks to mugs and models, as well as on scores of books.

Hymnal to 'play significant role in faith formation' of Reformed Christians Print Email

Faith Alive Christian Resources, the publishing house of the Christian Reformed Church in North America (CRCNA) and resource provider for the Reformed Church in America (RCA), has released its first comprehensive hymnal in more than 20 years.

Released June 1, Lift Up Your Hearts: Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs will be used by the CRCNA and RCA, nearly a decade after preliminary discussions began on the need for a new hymnal. Most hymnals currently in use in the RCA and CRC denominations were released in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

"So much has changed in the past 20 years," said the Rev. Joyce Borger, worship and music editor for Faith Alive. "With more focus on social justice issues, creation care, authentic emotions and global awareness along with greater ethnic diversity, we are a different church. Songs need to be added to the existing repertoire of our churches to reflect these changes, while maintaining the timeless classics we've grown to know and love."

Available for $19.99, Lift Up Your Hearts "builds on the existing repertoire currently in use by the RCA and CRC by including many of the same songs, but providing a breadth of music and variety of genres from classic hymns to contemporary world music," Faith Alive officials said.

In addition to the hardcover pew edition of Lift Up Your Hearts, digital editions of the complete hymnal for projection will be available at the end of August.

"This is a hymnal of the church for the church," Borger said. "Our ultimate desire is that this collection be deep enough to give voice to our praises and laments, be both sung prayer and proclamation, and play a significant role in the faith formation of Reformed Christians old and young alike."

The Evangelical Christian Publishers Association (ECPA) has renamed and restructured its annual book cover award program.

This summer the association will debut the ECPA Top Shelf Awards, previously called the ECPA/Dickinson Press Book Cover Award program, to "celebrate the best book designs in Christian publishing," organizers said.

The submission period is Aug. 12-16, with winners to be announced at ECPA's PUBu, to be held Oct. 21-22 at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill.

Covers will be judged for their merits in appropriateness for the market; level of conceptual thinking; and quality of execution. Judges will choose at least 10 winners. Winning covers will be featured in a printed annual, designed by Faceout Studio and distributed to the industry's designers and design professionals at PUBu.

Sponsored by Faceout Studio, the awards will be managed by Torrey Sharp, the firm's principal, and judged by a panel of three top designers in the Christian product industry. Launched in 2007, the awards aim to educate, promote and recognize superior cover design in Christian publishing.

Don Cady, who has been with Wesleyan Publishing House (WPH) for more than 25 years, stepped down from his leadership role last month. Cady has served as WPH business manager, assistant publisher and most recently its general publisher.

Wayne MacBeth, executive director of communication and administration for the Wesleyan Church, will serve as acting general publisher.

"Don Cady has a great heart for service to the church and to the people of the church and for creating disciples through WPH products," MacBeth said at a May 29 farewell reception for Cady.

Cady, whose last day was May 31, "isn't retiring, but rather is open for new opportunities," WPH said.

He is credited for having several WPH books recognized, including The Invisible: What the Church Can Do to Find and Serve the Least of These by Arloa Sutter, which was honored in the Compassion category of Outreach Magazine's Outreach Resources of the Year Awards in 2011. Cady is also credited for helping ReThink Your Life by Stan Toler reach the CBA best-seller list.

Additionally, Cady founded the Indianapolis Christian Writers Conference in 2000, which drew editors, agents and authors from a significant number of Christian publishers.

Cady is also credited for bringing focus to WPH's vision and mission amid changes in the Wesleyan Church, culture and publishing industry. He transitioned Fishers, Ind.-based WPH from printing and distribution operations to more economically sound partnerships and outsource options.

Cady also helped establish WPH's global publishing presence through licensing more than 50 books and ministry resources of the publishing house for translation and distribution worldwide. He also resurrected the "Wesleyan Bible Commentary" project and completed the New Testament series.

'Buy a Bible' initiative to encourage Oklahoma tornado survivors Print Email

Berean Christian Stores are giving customers an opportunity to buy a Bible to encourage survivors of the May 20 tornado that devastated much of Moore, Okla.

The new "Buy a Bible to Benefit Oklahoma Relief and Recovery" initiative is part of the 18-outlet chain's Give Hope In Deed project, where each Berean store is involved in local ministry to people who are hurting or in need.

"For every Bible purchased by a guest, Berean will contribute a Bible to a tornado victim in Oklahoma," Berean Director of Marketing Denise Chaney told Christian Retailing. "The guest can then write a short, encouraging note to the recipient of the Bible on a Give Hope Indeed sticky [note], and guests may also choose to give the Bible they purchase as well.

"There is a possibility of Berean sending over 7,000 Bibles to the area," she added. "We have partnered with Matthew 25 Ministries here in Cincinnati, who indicated that they would be delighted to include these Bibles in their parcels being delivered to the tornado victims in Moore as a part of their larger relief and recovery initiative."
