‘Christmas Carol’ offers ‘redemption story’ Print Email

Christian retailers have a greater-than-usual opportunity to help promote the true meaning of Christmas for two reasons, according to author Stephen Skelton.

The Nov. 6 arrival in theaters of Disney's A Christmas Carol, starring Jim Carrey in an adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic, comes at a time when people are more ready than ever to reflect on the largely unknown spiritual foundations of the story, he said.

While A Christmas Carol is largely considered "a seasonal, secular story and placed alongside Frosty the Snowman," it is actually "a Christian redemption story," said Skelton. His A Christmas Carol: Special Edition has just gone to a second printing with Standard Publishing to meet demand after it was released in September with an initial 15,000-copy print run.

Many in society consider money to be the most important thing in life, "but as we have seen most profoundly in often very painful ways over the last several months, if we place money as the top thing in our lives, then we are destined for a fall," Skelton said.

Skelton's $7.99 paperback features the original Dickens text with Christian insights and devotional questions for groups and families.
