Christian publishing veteran Dan Penwell died at his Chattanooga, Tenn., home April 18 after a long battle with cancer and other illnesses. He was 68. Penwell--who in four decades served in sales, marketing, acquisitions and editorial production--most recently was director of new products and acquisitions from 2001-2008 for AMG Publishers, based in Chattanooga. During the eight years he was editorial director, AMG saw its annual production increase to more than 30 new titles, company officials said. AMG publishes Bibles as well as Christian books and other publications. He served as manager of product development/acquisitions for World Bible Publishers from 1989 to 1996. Additionally, Penwell served in a similar position with Hendrickson Publishers from 1996 to 2001. Penwell, who also worked for Family Christian Stores from 1972 to 1989, was honored with the Advanced Writers and Speakers Association's Golden Scroll Award as the Editor of the Year in 2005. "He leaves behind a legacy that will live on in the countless number of lives he touched throughout his storied career in Christian publishing," AMG officials said. "Dan had a heart for furthering God's kingdom, and his impact on others will be felt for generations to come." Penwell, who authored a number of books, including 101 Things to Do in the Year 2000 (Honor Books) and Bible Brain Quest (Workman Publishing), is survived by Gloria, his wife of 46 years. A funeral service was to be held April 22 in Kent City, Mich. |
