Edward England, considered a British publishing pioneer who published the best-selling works of Corrie ten Boom, Richard Wurmbrand and John and Elizabeth Sherrill, died May 16. He was 80. England-publisher of Hodder & Stoughton's religious publishing for more than a decade until he left in 1980-was responsible for commissioning or acquiring a string of best-sellers, including ten Boom's The Hiding Place, Nicky Cruz's Run Baby Run and Chuck Colson's Born Again, company officials said. England also wrote at least 30 books, including The Mountain That Moved and An Unfading Vision (both Hodder & Stoughton). In 1980, he acquired, for a handshake, the magazine Renewal, which focused on the charismatic world. England then set up his own literary agency, the first British agency to specialize in Christian books. From there he founded another publishing house, Highland Books, which released the best-seller Ordering Your Private World by Gordon MacDonald. England was recognized with an International Achievement award from the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association at Frankfurt Book Fair in 1999. |
