Bible teacher and author Dr. John Phillips has died, aged 83. He was the author of more than 50 books, including "The John Phillips Commentary Series" and "The John Phillips Bible Characters Series." "For almost a decade, we were privileged to publish Dr. Phillips's books," said Dennis R. Hillman, publisher at Kregel Publications. Phillips' "passion for God's Word never failed to touch all of us who worked with him," Hillman added. "He was not only a gifted speaker, writer and teacher, he was true Christian gentleman who didn't make much of himself, but made Jesus first in everything." Born in Newport, South Wales, in the U.K., Phillips served in the British Army in Palestine. He moved to Canada after World War II, where he worked for a British bank, married and founded a small church. Later, he joined the staff of Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, where he served as assistant director of the correspondence school. Preceded in death by his first wife, Jean Phillips, Phillips is survived by his wife, Betty Jean Ferrell Phillips; four children; four stepchildren; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. A funeral service was held at Gospel Light Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, N.C., on July 29. |
