Christian music and video titles were the most popular gift items at Christian stores on Black Friday, Nov. 26. According to a report by CBA, its CROSS:SCAN (Christian Retail Official Sales Statistics) service found that video sales for the week ending Nov. 27 up 190% and music sales rose 109%—compared to the previous four weeks. Of the top 10 best-selling items for all Christian book, Bible and music materials, five were CDs and three were DVDs. Of the top 25 best-selling items for the week ending Nov. 27, nine were CDs and seven were DVDs. During the same time period, Bible sales were up 53% and book sales rose 42%. According to CROSS:SCAN, the average sale price for Bibles on Black Friday rose 21.3%, while Christian books climbed 15%, and music increased 9.8%. Video prices did not fluctuate. CBA Executive Director Curtis Riskey said that the price reports reflected purchases of higher quality items for gifting, especially for Bibles. Price comparisons were based on suggested retail price not actual discounted prices. Riskey added that the sales trends mirrored other retail channels, where price is an important factor in gift purchasing during tough economic times.
