Howard Books, a division of Simon & Schuster, will publish a book about the Sabbath by former vice-presidential candidate and Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman.

Set to release in August, Gift of Rest looks at the beauty of the Sabbath observance—a practice that has anchored and inspired Lieberman's life. Co-written with David Klinghoffer, the book shows how ceasing all activity for a weekly Sabbath observance has profound benefit—including health, relational and career advancement.

"I know some people will think it is unusual for a U.S. senator to write a book about a religious subject like the Sabbath, and no less unusual for a Jew to write about such a topic for an audience of Christians and other faiths as well as Jews," Lieberman said. "I have done so because of all the Sabbath has meant to me as a person and as a senator. Its rest is a gift from God that I want to share with readers of all faiths."

Jonathan Merkh, Howard Books vice president and publisher, said that the book will not only inspire a broad range of people, "but will change lives."

As the 2000 Democratic vice-presidential candidate, Lieberman became the first Jew in American history to run for national office on a major party ticket.
