Eric Metaxas—author of Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy (Thomas Nelson), named the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association's Christian Book of the Year earlier this month—has been awarded the Canterbury Medal by The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty.

Metaxas was recognized for his biography on World War II German pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer during the public interest law firm's 16th annual dinner event May 12 in Washington, D.C.

Metaxas has written "a prophetic biography of a prophetic figure," Becket Fund President Emeritus Kevin Hasson said. "It is a bracing—and timely—call to conscience. We feel honored to award the Canterbury Medal to someone who has convincingly made the intellectual case for faith within culture."

Previous medalists have included Princeton University law professor Robert P. George, Archbishop Charles Chaput and Holocaust survivor and Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel. Metaxas called the award an "unfathomable honor." Writing on Facebook, Metaxas said that after the dinner, he went outside and sang "Amazing Grace" and "I'll Fly Away" with George—last year's Canterbury Medal winner—playing guitar.
