Summer is an ideal time for stores to experiment with value-priced books, according to Shalyn Sattler, director of trade marketing at Barbour Publishing.

With many consumers looking for "budget-friendly book options," events like a Summer Reading Sidewalk Sale can help promote bargain buys and encourage repeat visits by regular shoppers, she says.

In-store placement is key, Sattler writes in an article in the July issue of Christian Retailing magazine. "There's no reason to beat around the bush. Your customers are looking for great buys and you need to highlight them as clearly as possible." Among her suggestions, displays near the front door and checkout register and clear signage.

As many publishers offer discounts on budget-priced books in case lots, stores could pass on their savings to customers by making the prices even lower or using the titles as giveaways. "Send them to your VIP shoppers, use them to create a holiday-themed gift basket or keep them handy as door prizes," Sattler suggests. "You'll create some buzz and promote the titles all at the same time."

She also recommends contacting local churches to let them know that low-priced books would make affordable gifts for Sunday school classes, pastors, congregation members, administrative assistants and Bible study groups. "You have the potential to receive some nice orders and also to start building valuable relationships."
