To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, The Freedom Bible will be released this month to honor those who lost their lives, and celebrate those who led rescue efforts during the tragedy.

A collaborative effort between American Bible Society (ABS) and The Salvation Army, The Freedom Bible highlights stories of how the Bible has helped people to overcome trauma. Featuring the Contemporary English Version, the edition is being promoted as the first Bible to highlight more than 3,500 verses that refer to various aspects of freedom, including from fear, suffering, loss, anger and guilt, among others.

Headquartered in Manhattan, N.Y., ABS was on the scene on 9/11 and in the days after, ministering to first responders and the families of those missing or killed. "Sept. 11 forced us as individuals and as a nation to choose between being prisoner of the trauma of that terrible day or finding the hope and freedom to move forward," said Geof Morin, chief communications officer at ABS. "For thousands of Americans, the comfort offered through the Bible allowed them to choose freedom."

Retailing for $19.99, The Freedom Bible will be available in late September in Christian retail outlets, including LifeWay and Family Christian Stores, and ChristianBooks.com.

To coincide with the release of the Bible, ABS commissioned a survey conducted online by Harris Interactive. The poll found that despite significant security measures taken since Sept. 11, only 9% of Americans feel safer today than they did prior to the terrorist attacks. The survey also found that only 4% of Americans rely most on professional counseling to help deal with trauma. Four times as many (16%) rely most on the Bible.
