Five-time Dove Award-winning Female Vocalist of the Year Natalie Grant and gospel artist BeBe Winans performed yesterday during the "Let Freedom Ring" Commemoration and Call to Action at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. The event commemorated the historic speech delivered by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1963. President Barack Obama delivered remarks, honoring King's call to "Let freedom ring" by ringing bells at 3 p.m. EDT—50 years to the minute after King delivered his address. "What an incredible honor to stand in the heart of our nation and sing the name of Jesus," Grant wrote in a Facebook post. Elsewhere, The City Harmonic, who earlier this year won the Juno Awards' Contemporary Christian/Gospel Album of the Year for I Have a Dream (It Feels Like Home) (Integrity Music/Provident Distribution), was spotlighted yesterday during the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's The National news program on the King speech anniversary. "[King's] speech is obviously still relevant today, but I hope that in the future that it's not relevant at all, but that it's remembered for its historical importance" the band's Elias Dummer said.
