Big Book of Earth & Sky (Masters Books) took home the first-place gold medal in the “Best Activity Book—Educational, Science or History” category at the 2013 Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards on Oct. 3. There were 165 medalists in all, chosen from over 1,200 total entries. The winners represent 35 U.S. states, five Canadian provinces and seven overseas countries. The Jenkins Group—a Michigan-based book marketing group—created the Moonbeam Awards in 2007. The winners represent the best books published for children and young adults during the previous year. “Creating books that inspire our children to read, to learn and to dream is an extremely important task, and these awards were conceived to reward those efforts,” the Jenkins Group said in a statement. Big Book of Earth & Sky is a 15-foot vertical chart that takes readers from the inner core of the Earth to the outer atmosphere. Co-editors Carolyn Reeves (a 30-year science teacher and educational consultant) and Bodie Hodge (a writer, speaker and author for Answers in Genesis) created the illustrated project, which features key science elements for each stage of the chart. |
