Author and pastor Steve Mays died Friday, Oct. 3 due to complications following back surgery. Mays was 64 years old.

Mays was author of two Bethany House (Baker Publishing Group) books, Overwhelmed by God and Not Your Troubles (2013) and Overcoming (2012).

“Bethany House wishes to express their condolences to pastor Mays’ family, friends and church for this great loss,” said a statement from the company.

Senior pastor of Calvary Chapel South Bay in Gardena, California, for nearly 35 years, Mays was a well-known conference speaker and radio personality, heard through the Light of the Word broadcast by thousands in the U.S. and abroad. In addition, he had taught at the Christian Embassy United Nations in New York City as well as at the Ambassador Study, the Diplomat Study and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.

Mays is survived by his wife, Gail; two grown children, Nathan and Heather; and four grandchildren.
