'War Room' closes in on top spot opening weekend |

TriStar Pictures’ War Room debuted at No. 2 at the domestic box office the weekend of Aug. 28-30. The faith-based film topped industry expectations, grossing $11 million, according to studio estimates. War Room also boasted the highest per-screen average of the top 12 films at an estimated $9,691 per screen. The film's strong average allowed it to overcome its meager screen count—1,135 screens—and come within $2 million of winning the weekend. Rap movie Straight Outta Compton was the only film that surpassed War Room. War Room receipts opening weekend has more than tripled its $3 million production budget in the first three days of release. Alex Kendrick directed the Provident Films and Affirm Films movie, while Stephen Kendrick was producer and co-writer. The pair are known for their work on previous successful Christian films, including Fireproof and Courageous. |
