David C Cook announced Monday the acquisition of the curriculum resources of Ventura, California-based Gospel Light. Like David C Cook, Gospel Light has a long and rich spiritual heritage. One of the 20th century’s greatest Christian educators, Dr. Henrietta Mears, began the company out of her garage in 1933. Her teaching and the Sunday school curriculum she developed influenced leaders such as Bill Bright, Richard Halverson and Billy Graham. A number of years earlier, another visionary had a similar passion for teaching the world about Jesus. In 1875, David Caleb Cook founded the company known today as David C Cook. Since then, David C Cook, a nonprofit organization, has reached millions of adults and children with books, curriculum, worship music and other "DiscipleShaping" resources. David C Cook CEO Cris Doornbos is pleased with the acquisition. “It only makes sense that two companies with such an incredible history of changing lives would come together in the same publishing family,” Doornbos said. “We’re thrilled to be able to continue the tradition of quality Christian education that Dr. Mears established over 80 years ago.” Gospel Light voluntarily filed for bankruptcy in August. Gospel Light’s mission “to know Christ and make Him known” is the same today as it was in 1933. With the acquisition, David C Cook plans to further that mission on a global scale for generations to come. |
