Thomas Nelson and WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group have taken prizes in the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association (ECPA)/Dickinson Press Book Cover Awards for the second year running.

Ted Dekker's Adam won for Nelson in the larger publisher category (251-plus titles a year), while On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness by Andrew Peterson took the honors for WaterBrook Multnomah in the mid-sized publisher grouping (101-250 titles).

The awards were announced last night at ECPA's PUBu conference in Chicago, when the small-size publisher award (less than 100 titles) went to David C. Cook for Claudia Mair Burney's Zora and Nicky. Best Bible cover winner was The Literary Study Bible (Crossway Books & Bibles).

The four winners were chosen by judges from a total of 63 nominations. The cover awards were launched last year to "encourage, identify and celebrate 'best in class' design for Christian publishing's book covers." The new program followed a Dickinson Press study looking at how consumer demographics impacted the effectiveness of cover designs.

In the 2007 awards, Nelson won the best Bible class for The Voice of Acts: The Dust Off Their Feet, and Multnomah's The Wounded Warrior by Steve Stephens took the small publisher category.

More than 200 registered for this year's Pub U, which ends tomorrow. The program includes workshops on topics and trends such as green publishing, retailer relations and marketing initiatives.
