The second feature-length VeggieTales movie is to be released for home viewing this weekend with two hours of bonus material. The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: A VeggieTales Movie arrives at Christian retail stores Oct. 11, thanks to maker Big Idea's traditional three-day advance for the channel on general market sales. Produced in association with Universal Pictures, Pirates debuted in theaters in January. Rated G, the film generated $12.7 million after an eight-week run in 1,340 theaters nationwide, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com. It featured three pirate characters that first appeared in 2002's Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie, and has since joined the prior release on the list of top 10 faith-based films of all time. Written by VeggieTales co-founder Phil Vischer, Pirates follows Larry the Cucumber, Mr. Lunt and Pa Grape as they discover what it really means to be a hero. The film features music from Toby Mac, Newsboys and Relient K. Behind-the-scenes bonus material includes interviews with production staff, a feature-length commentary track and a "how to draw" guide for children. The Bob & Larry's Playhouse section includes sing-along versions of songs from the movie, video trivia and an interactive book and game. Additional material includes a Becoming a Real-Life Hero mini-documentary in which Larry the Cucumber offers a behind-the-scenes look at a firehouse and a police station. To be backed by a major marketing campaign and with premiere events planned for almost 3,000 churches and stores, Pirates is being distributed to the Christian market by Word Distribution. |
