Christian retailers aiming to reach the Catholic market have a resource in the three customizable catalogs now available widely through Roth Advertising.

All three catalogs--Spirit of Books from the Association of Catholic Publishers; Catholic Gifts from the Catholic Retailers Association; and Theological Best Books for the Association of Theological Booksellers--can be used as retail sales tools. Bookstores order in quantities from 50 to 20,000 copies. Stores that want their bookstore name and order information printed on the catalog must order a minimum of 1,000 copies.

Flywheel (Provident Films/Provident-Integrity Distribution) was atop the SoundScan's Christian Videos list for sales the week ending July 7, while Hello Love by Chris Tomlin (sixstepsrecords/EMI CMG Distribution) held the top spot of the Christian/gospel music Christian retail chart.

GRAMMY winner Walter Hawkins dies Print Email

GRAMMY-winning gospel singer, composer and pastor Walter Hawkins died July 11 at his home in Ripon, Calif. For the last two years, Hawkins had been battling pancreatic cancer. He was 61.

The brother of Edwin Hawkins of "Oh Happy Day" fame, Hawkins cut a series of best-selling "Love Alive" albums for Light Records during the 1970s. Hawkins' songs have been recorded by Aretha Franklin, American Idol champ Ruben Studdard, Vickie Winans and M.C. Hammer.

Publishers respond to author controversy Print Email

Kregel Publications is standing behind author Ergun Caner following his removal as dean at Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary in the wake of "self-contradictory" statements made in sermons and speeches. Liberty has retained him as professor.

Kregel reviewed Caner's books in light of reports alleging that Caner had exaggerated or embellished the facts of his life story. Kregel Publisher Dennis Hillman said that the company had concluded the titles it has published by Caner--including Unveiling Islam and More Than a Prophet, both which Caner co-authored with his brother, Emir Fethi Caner--were "trustworthy, factually accurate and helpful to both Christians and seekers wanting to know more about Islamic beliefs and how those beliefs compare and contrast with biblical Christianity."

Ministry leader urges support for Christian stores Print Email

An author and international ministry leader has urged his organization's supporters to shop at Christian bookstores to help keep them in business.

David Shibley, president of Global Advance, made the appeal in an e-mail message following a visit to the International Christian Retail Show (ICRS) in St. Louis, June 27-30.

CBA revises ICRS figures Print Email

Attendance for this year's International Christian Retail Show (ICRS) turned out to be a fraction lower than last year-not higher, as previously announced by CBA.

Occupying the smallest floor space in recent years, the resized four-day event last month at the America's Center in St. Louis, saw total attendance of 4,647, according to CBA's new audited show figures-2% lower than 2009's 4,744 turnout in Denver.

Loyola Press names new president Print Email

Teresa "Terry" Locke has been named president of Loyola Press, succeeding George Lane. Since 2006, Locke has served as COO and associate publisher of the Chicago-based, Catholic publisher. In her new position, Locke will report to Chairman Theodore Munz.

After working in corporate marketing for 12 years at Fisher Scientific Commodore Computers, Locke joined Loyola in 1996. In her new role, Locke will be responsible for moving Loyola "forward into the digital publishing arena."

Locke said Loyola's e-books and iPhone and iPod apps "are a natural evolution" for the company. Currently, Loyola has more than 120 titles available in e-book format and three iPad apps.

 
Provident Label Group promotes Jordyn Thomas Print Email

Jordyn Thomas has been promoted to senior director of artists and repertoire (A&R) for Provident Label Group.

Thomas has been responsible for developing artists such as Brandon Heath and Tenth Avenue North, who, respectively, have claimed "New Artist of the Year" and "Song of the Year" honors over the past two Gospel Music Association (GMA) Dove Awards.

In her new role, Thomas will continue to scout, sign and develop new artists as well as work with established artists such as Jars of Clay.

Terry Hemmings, president and CEO of Provident Music Group, said Thomas "has an ear for songs and artists who fit our market." "She's demonstrated incredible consistency in signing artists who resonate with our consumer base," Hemmings said. "I'm proud to have her on the Provident team."

Thomas began her music industry career in 1998 as an administrative assistant with Reunion Records.  She moved into support roles within artist development areas of both Reunion and Essential Records, rising from artist development coordinator to A&R manager to her most recent post of director of A&R.

Thomas serves on the GMA's Immerse planning committee, and has been on the board of The Home Foundation since its inception in 2006.
