Though music sales have taken a big hit in recent years, the category still has life in it with Christian retailers reporting good sales through in-store disc burning.

"We are really starting to see some results,' said Jeff Williams, co-owner of Bible Book Store in Victoria, Texas. "We're finding that once people really understand the capabilities of the digital stuff, they are really impressed."

A participant in a Christian Retailing roundtable discussion on music sales, Williams said: "If you don't have digital, you need to get it in the door. Try to understand where the market is for your location. ... The buying public is interested in that immediate satisfaction and we need to make sure they are getting that in our stores and not going to an online place to get the same thing."

An online Catholic church resource supplier has launched a parish registry program to help cash-strapped congregations.

Similar to wedding registry programs, the parish gift registry started by CatholicChurchSupply.com enables a local church to set up its own wish list for parishioners to contribute to or to purchase.

The last name of the Spring Arbor representative reported in Thursday's Christian Retailing Update was incorrect. Industry friends and colleagues are mourning the death of Eric Fields. We regret the error.

 
New Leaf DVD takes two awards Print Email

A documentary by New Leaf Publishing Group has won commendations from the International Christian Visual Media (ICVM) group.

Evolution: The Grand Experiment--The Quest for an Answer, based on a book by Carl Werner, took first place in the organization's Best Youth Film and Best Curriculum categories of its 2010 awards and a second spot for best Documentary Over $50,000.

The honors were announced at the ICVM conference held in St. Louis, last month, prior to the International Christian Retail Show there.

The first in a planned series of videos, the 59-minute documentary was released last year and retails for $19.99. It has been shown on five television networks in more than 70 countries. Examining the theory of evolution, the material is based on Werner's 30 years' research.

New Leaf Publishing Group author and pastor Shannon O'Dell challenges status-quo thinking in his new book, Transforming Church in Rural America, one of many titles spotlighted in Christian Retailing's Virtual Christian Retailing Show.

Running through Labor Day, Sept. 6, the show is hosted by Christian Retailing magazine, aiming to help stores set themselves for the fall and Christmas seasons with product news, order specials and training. It is the magazine's fourth virtual trade event since debuting the innovative program following last year's ICRS.

‘Lord Save Us’ to air on TBN Print Email

A documentary on the culture wars and religious debate that has received positive reviews, Lord Save Us From Your Followers will debut tonight at 7 p.m. PST on the Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN).

Released in theaters last September, the film was written and directed by Dan Merchant, who wrote the book Lord, Save Us From Your Followers: Why is the Gospel of Love Dividing America?, published by Thomas Nelson in 2008. The DVD was released in April and distributed to Christian retail by New Day Christian Distributors.
