Retailers Choice Awards finalists announced Print Email

Voting retailers have chosen the finalists in the ninth annual Retailers Choice Awards, sponsored by Christian Retailing magazine. The finalists in the 250-plus products nominated in 30 categories are listed online.

Winners will be announced during the International Christian Retail Show in Denver. A press conference will be held in room 607 at the Colorado Convention Center at 11 a.m. Monday, July 13. Retailers who voted this year have the opportunity to win hundreds of dollars worth of the nominated products, and their names will be announced at the press conference.

Eldredge DVD study due in September Print Email

John Eldredge's Fathered by God (Thomas Nelson) is getting the DVD study treatment Sept. 29, a few months before the author's debut book with Doubleday Books releases.

Released April 21, Fathered by God--a repackage and revision of Eldredge's The Way of the Wild Heart (2006, Thomas Nelson)--was the subject of a three-week speaking tour the author conducted in April-May. The study will feature 3- to 6-minute introductions from Eldredge followed by 15-20 minutes of a men's small group led by the author in a "band of brothers"-type setting.

B&H authors signing at Baptist convention Print Email

Several B&H Publishing Group authors will conduct book signings during the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), which kicks off Sunday, June 21, in Louisville, Ky. The 2009 SBC Annual Meeting is June 23-24.

Authors scheduled to sign their books Monday, June 22, in the LifeWay Christian Stores area of the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center include Ed Blum (Holman Christian Standard Bible); Mike Glenn (In Real Time); Diana Davis (Deacon Wives); Joyce Rogers (Grace for the Widow); Brad Waggoner (The Shape of Faith to Come); Ed Stetzer (Lost and Found); and Danny Lovett (Extreme Exploits).

Authors scheduled to sign their books Tuesday, June 23, include Michael Catt (The Power of Desperation); Jerry Rankin (Spiritual Warfare); Ken Hemphill (You Are Gifted); and Stephen and Alex Kendrick (The Love Dare).

B&H Publishing Group is the book division of LifeWay Christian Resources.

 
T.D. Jakes ‘barely avoided’ explosion Print Email

Bishop T.D. Jakes, pastor of the The Potter's House in Dallas and author of Before You Do (Atria), told his congregation last Sunday that a last-minute change of plans kept him from being killed in a natural gas explosion at his Fort Worth, Texas, home earlier this month.

According to The Dallas Morning News, Jakes said he would have been getting dressed near the site of the blast if he hadn't suddenly had a feeling that he should cancel a meeting. Because of that, he was nowhere near the sunroom of his home when the explosion occurred June 7.

Despite economy, CBA upbeat about ICRS Print Email

Though a diamond anniversary typically involves a lot of looking back, the Christian products industry has an eye on the future as it gathers for its 60th annual summer bash, next month.

While the International Christian Retail Show returns to Denver, July 12-15, in the thick of a tough economy that seems set to shrink booth spaces and attendee numbers, CBA President Bill Anderson remains upbeat about the association's summer convention.

Christian retail traffic drop leveling off Print Email

Christian store tracker Britt Beemer said that the channel's fall in traffic is leveling off.

According to his latest America's Research Group (ARG) survey, 5.5% of the population visited a Christian retail store during May. That is only slightly down on the 5.8% that did so in March, and compares favorably to the 5.6% that did so in May 2008.

Publishers, retailers must go beyond ‘customer base’ Print Email

Christian publishers and retailers need to come up with ways to reach beyond their existing consumer base to reach an untapped potential audience.

That is the appeal from publishing leader Mark Kuyper, who says recent research has underscored the "staggering" potential for "ministry, discipleship and growth" among Christians who are not reached by existing marketing efforts.
