Author Matthew Kelly made a significant showing with four entries on the March Catholic hardcover best-sellers list, while C.S. Lewis titles were featured on the paperback list.

Kelly's Rediscovering Catholicism (Beacon Publishing) landed at No. 1 on the hardcover list, followed by: 2. Mother Angelica's Private and Pithy Lessons From the Scriptures by Raymond Arroyo (Doubleday); 3. The Dream Manager by Kelly (Hyperion); 4. Parallel Empires by Massimo Franco (Doubleday); 5. Celebration of Discipline: 25th Anniversary Edition by Richard Foster (HarperOne); 6. Surprised by Hope by N.T. Wright (HarperOne); 7. The Rhythm of Life by Kelly (Fireside); 8. Koch Entertainment changes name Print Email

Koch Entertainment Distribution, which distributes a wide range of movies and music artists to Christian retail stores, has been renamed E1 Entertainment Distribution. The change follows parent company Entertainment One's rebranding as E1 Entertainment.

The changes were intended to help the distributor "continue to set the pace as the leading independent music and video distributor in North America," said E1 Entertainment CEO Michael Koch.

Cook announces 'Hear It First' campaign Print Email

David C. Cook has announced a partnership with Integrity Music, HearItFirst.com and Gibson/Epiphone Guitars for the "Hear It First, Read It First" campaign, which will promote two of the publishers forthcoming summer releases.

Targeting worship leaders and teams as well as church leaders, the contest and promotion also seeks to appeal to the audience of two popular singers/authors, Glenn Packiam and Brian Doerksen. One of the founding leaders and songwriters for the Desperation Band, Packiam wrote Secondhand Jesus: Trading Rumors of God for a Firsthand Faith, set for release in June. An award-winning songwriter, Doerksen wrote Make Love, Make War: NOW is the Time to Worship, scheduled for release in August.

Valentine’s Day spending decreases Print Email

In another sign of a bleak retail economy, consumers plan to spend an average $102.50 on Valentine's gifts and merchandise-down from last year's $122.98 per person, according to the National Retail Federation's (NRF) 2009 Valentine's Day Consumer Intentions and Actions survey that was conducted by BIGresearch.

Total Valentine's Day spending is expected to reach $14.7 billion, down slightly from last year. "A bad economy won't stop Cupid this Valentine's Day, but it might slow him down," said NRF President and CEO Tracy Mullin. "This year more than ever, consumers will look for creative and inexpensive ways to show those they love how much they mean to them."

'Fireproof' wins Epiphany Prize Print Email

The surprise hit drama Fireproof and The Christmas Choir were the big winners in this year's John Templeton Foundation Epiphany Prizes for Inspiring Movies and TV.

The film starring Kirk Cameron as a firefighter who turns Christ to save his marriage received the $100,000 Epiphany Prize for Film, while the movie broadcast on the Hallmark Channel garnered the $100,000 Epiphany Prize for Television during the 17th Annual Movieguide Faith & Values Awards & Report to the Entertainment Industry, held last night in Beverly Hills, Calif., the Associated Press reported.

LifeWay doing 'remarkably well' Print Email

Despite an economy that many observers say is going from bad to worse, LifeWay Christian Resources (LCR) is doing "remarkably well," LifeWay executives have told trustees.

"LifeWay's financial health is good," Jerry Rhyne, LCR's chief financial officer said at their semiannual meeting, Feb. 9-10, Baptist Press (BP) reported. He cited a strong balance sheet, no debt, a healthy reserve fund, a growing revenue trend, a strong and diverse customer base and a steady stream of theologically sound resources.

Religious book sales rise Print Email

Reversing a downward pattern over several months, sales of religious books increased 3.5% in December, while all book categories rose 9.7% for the month, according to the Association of American Publishers.

The month's sales for religious books were $ 49.3 million, while the category's sales were down 7.6% for the year. Sales of religious books previously decreased 9%, 25.6%, 11.8% and 10.8% for the months of November, October, September and August, respectively.

Tooth & Nail Records/BEC Recordings has promoted Tamara Moore as national promotions manager. Moore's duties include managing the radio team and developing new artists as well as continuing to support the established roster. Moore previously worked with the label as an independent promotions coordinator since 2007.
