Britt BeemerConsumer researcher Britt Beemer has gloomy news for Christian retailers, for whom he has delivered past landmark studies on the channel's customers.
According to his America's Research Group (ARG), Christian bookstores' share of business dropped significantly, in January data. Slightly more than 6% of the population shopped at a Christian bookstore, compared to 12.4% the same time last year.

The figures were revealed in ARG's latest bimonthly Consumer Mind Reader report, which tracks the performance of 26 retail categories based on surveys of 1,000 of the general population. Other categories followed include discount, hardware, furniture and toy stores. Per capita spending in Christian bookstores reported in January was $4.58, compared to $9.53 last year.

In other new research, Beemer found almost 29% of Americans saying they were buying only essential and on-sale items. “Retailers are experiencing their most challenging time in three decades,” said Beemer, the author of two consumer research studies for CBA.
