- David 'Pop' Winans, the patriarch of the multi-award winning Winans Family musical dynasty, died yesterday in a Nashville hospice. He was 74, and had suffered a heart attack and stroke in October last year.
-
- Raised in the Church of God in Christ in Detroit, Winans sang and played saxophone and clarinet in groups as a young man. After marrying Delores Ransom in 1953, he worked multiple jobs to support the couple's 10 children but also found time to be active in his local community.
-
-
- Winans' sons Michael, Marvin, Carvin and Ronald—who died in 2005—won six GRAMMYs as The Winans, while BeBe & CeCe Winans saw R&B/crossover success as a duo. The Winans' other children have also made recording careers.
-
- Winans and his wife recorded their own GRAMMY-winning album, Mom & Pop Winans in 1989 and the follow-up, The Rest of My Life. Winans also recorded a 1999 solo CD, Uncensored, which was nominated for a GRAMMY. In recent years the couple had been regular guests on the Trinity Broadcasting Network's Praise the Lord program.
-
- Memorial and homegoing services are to be held April 14 and 15 at Perfecting Church in Detroit, where Marvin L. Winans is senior pastor. In a statement announcing Winans' death, his family thanked people for "their prayers and continued support, but would appreciate privacy at this time."
