To create a buzz for the new Thomas Nelson book The Search for God and Guinness, Joel Miller, vice president and publisher for business, culture and general interest, gave away 150 free copies at an Irish pub in Nashville to those purchasing a pint of Guinness beer on the company's 250th anniversary, last Thursday. Miller announced the promotion in his blog posting, "Start a buzz for God and Guinness", and through Twitter. "As we struggle through the results of corporate greed and political corruption, the Guinness story shines as an example of how people can build and create and prosper while helping others," he wrote. The book explores how the Guinness family's Christian faith shaped the way it ran the business and how it took care of its employees. Author Stephen Mansfield-whose previous titles include The Faith of Barack Obama (Thomas Nelson) and The Faith of George W. Bush (Charisma House/Strang Book Group)-told Christian Retailing that the idea for the book was born out of current economic and political conditions. "I had been coming out of the political season and a lot of debates, thinking about the founding fathers' vision of society and so I began to think a lot about what was in society, like corporate scandals, the election," he said. "I have always been intrigued by the Guinness family, which was a strongly Christian family. (They) funded the gospel around the world." Subtitled "A Biography of the Beer that Changed the World," The Search for God and Guinness releases Oct. 13. |
