Christian historian and author Peter J. Marshall died Sept. 8 after suffering a massive heart attack at a gym in Orleans, Mass. He was 70. Marshall co-authored three best-selling U.S. history books--The Light and the Glory and From Sea to Shining Sea (Fleming H. Revell Co.) as well as Sounding Forth the Trumpet (Revell/Baker Publishing Group). After graduating from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1965, Marshall served as a pastor in Connecticut and Massachusetts for 12 years. He devoted much of his life to restoring and maintaining America's Christian heritage. Marshall's father, also named Peter Marshall, was considered one of America's most beloved pastors and was twice the Senate's chaplain. His mother, Catherine Marshall, was well-known for writing the biography A Man Called Peter (McGraw-Hill) and the groundbreaking 1967 novel Christy (McGraw-Hill)--the namesake of the Christy Awards. Marshall is survived by three children and three grandchildren. The children's mother, Edith Marshall Roberts, also survives. His funeral was to be held today in Orleans. |
