Concordia Publishing House (CPH) has been named a 2011 recipient of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the nation’s highest presidential honor for performance excellence through innovation, improvement and visionary leadership. “It is with God’s grace that CPH has achieved a level of excellence that few major corporations realize,” said Bruce G. Kintz, president and CEO of CPH, the publishing arm of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. “As a Christian organization, we are humbled by our achievements, and as a thriving publishing house, we are proud to represent both innovation and sustainability in this ever-changing marketplace.” In announcing the award recipients, U.S. Commerce Secretary John Bryson said that CPH and the three other organizations that received the honor were commended for their “innovative practices, an unwavering commitment to excellence, dynamic management and proven results” and will serve as role models “not only for their peers in the health care, nonprofit and business sectors—but for every American organization that strives for a higher standard of performance and never settles for second-best.” Named after the 26th Secretary of Commerce, the Malcolm Baldrige Award was established in 1987 to enhance the competitiveness and performance of U.S. organizations. The 2011 award recipients were selected from a field of 69 applicants, evaluated in seven areas: leadership; strategic planning; customer focus; measurement, analysis and knowledge management; workforce focus; operations focus; and results. CPH, which has a workforce of 247 employees and revenues of $35 million, and the other three Baldrige Award recipients—all health-care operations—are to be presented with their awards in April in a ceremony in Washington, D.C.
