Chonda Pierce: Laughing in the Dark was the No. 1 per-screen average in ticket sales and No. 5 movie in America on Tuesday, Oct. 27. The documentary premiered in select theaters across the country for a one-night-only cinema engagement, garnering sellouts in more than 125 theaters. The film will return to the big screen for a special encore showing Tuesday, Nov. 17. Originally, the film was meant to be about how the No. 1-selling female comedian of all time had such success while keeping her comedy clean, but the project changed significantly while in production as Pierce's husband, David Pierce, battled alcoholism and died following emergency brain surgery. "I am overwhelmed with gratitude at the incredible reaction and immense support for the film,” she said. “Life's not perfect—I've had to endure pain, depression and grief—but I want to share my story to give others hope. I am very pleased many more will be able to take part in an important national dialogue about grief, mental illness and faith when Laughing in the Dark returns to theaters on Nov. 17." Rick Altizer, Laughing in the Dark director and co-founder of Fuseic Entertainment, said the film was accomplishing kingdom work. “Ephesians 5 says that God is able to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think,” Altizer said. “I am so grateful Chonda allowed me to show her vulnerability and honesty. Her transparency takes this film beyond mere entertainment, and people are being touched and encouraged through her journey. This is how God chooses to work. From death comes life. Resurrection is shared." Click here to see Pierce's appearance on Entertainment Tonight on CBS. |
