WestBow Press author Davis Bunn was injured in a shark attack Thursday while surfing near his home in Melbourne, Fla. Bunn told Christian Retailing he was paddling out when the shark bit both his feet. Bunn, who lives 18 miles from the nearest hospital, was helped back to his car by three other surfers and drove himself home before seeking medical treatment. He has 100 stitches in one foot and 20 in the other after surgery, but is expected to make a full recovery. Elixir, the author's March 2004 release from WestBow, featured a professional surfer as the lead character. Bunn said he has “two generations of surfing experience” and that he was excited to return to the water following his recovery and will surf again. He expressed gratitude to the three surfers who aided him, and had a message for surfers who are looking for the ultimate secluded spot and who surf alone: “I would urge you strongly (to go with others). I think the only reason I made it as well as I did was because I was with others,” he said. Bunn is expected to make a full recovery. “Davis is a key WestBow author and a personal friend,” said WestBow Publisher Allen Arnold. “That he is doing so well after such a terrifying event is no surprise given the courageous way he approaches both life and his novels.” Bunn expressed gratitude for prayers and concern in the Christian product market. “We've just had amazing prayer support,” he said.
