Author Barbara Johnson has announced the formation of a foundation to help families through difficult circumstances. Self-named, Johnson has been involved in such ministry for 30 years by sharing her experiences in more than 20 best-selling books and leading Spatula Ministries.

Johnson lost two sons, one in Vietnam and another killed by a drunk driver. Another son was estranged for several years. Johnson's husband, Bill, died three years ago, and she has been diagnosed with a brain tumor and diabetes.

“By forming the foundation, we can reach many more people, and provide the helping hand of counseling and support for families experiencing loss and grief,” said Johnson, a regular speaker with Women of Faith since 1996.

Johnson said her eldest surviving son, David Johnson, will serve as executive director of the foundation. “By creating the foundation and utilizing our Web site, www.barbaraspatulajohnson.com, we can provide insightful information and referrals to facilitate families seeking Christian counselors or support groups in their local areas,” David Johnson said.

He noted that the database will also feature his mother's humorous monthly newsletter, “The Love Line,” and The Encouragement Project, an online message board for people in crisis.

Johnson's books include Stick a Geranium in Your Hat and Be Happy!, Pack Up Your Gloomies in a Great Big Box, Then Sit on the Lid and Laugh! and Splashes of Joy in the Cesspools of Life (all published by Thomas Nelson).

Johnson was awarded the Jordan Lifetime Achievement Award by the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association in July 2005.
