Theologian Harold O.J. Brown dies at 74 |

Respected academic, early pro-life advocate and author Harold O.J. Brown died Sunday evening, July 8, surrounded by family members and close friends. With former U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, Brown was co-founder of the Christian Action Council, renamed Care Net, which now supports a network of pregnancy resource centers. He held several professorships at Reformed Theological Seminary and at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, where he was named faculty member of the year in 1989. He also received Fulbright and Danforth awards. Brown was also author of a number of books, including The Sensate Culture (Word, 1996) and Heresies (Hendrickson Publishers, 1998). Active in a number of magazine editorial positions, he was contributing editor for Christianity Today and Chronicles: A Magazine of American Culture. The funeral will be held at Springs Presbyterian Church, 1060 West Withlacoochee Trail in Dunellon, Fla., on Thursday. A memorial service will be held in Charlotte, N.C., on Saturday, July 28, at 2 p.m. at Carmel Presbyterian Church. |
