Sherwood Baptist Church of Albany, Ga., that made the inspirational football movie Facing the Giants has netted $855,000 from the film's DVD, according to an Associated Press (AP) report.

The church's pastor, the Rev. Michael Catt, told his congregation that Provident Films had sent an initial advance royalty check for the amount and that a substantial portion of it, $600,000, would be used to reduce debt with the remaining amount to be used for an 82-acre sports complex.

The film, which showed no profits from its theatrical release after distribution expenses, was made by the church at a cost of about $100,000, according to church officials, who also told the AP that the DVD has been translated into 10 languages, and is being used as a motivational tool in churches, schools and other groups.

The pastor said the income was “a bonus” and noted that because people all over the world saw the film, the church was “able to make a huge and significant impact on our community.”

A novelization of the film by Eric Wilson and published by Thomas Nelson is now in stores.
