InterVarsity Press (IVP) celebrated its 60th birthday in an appropriately reserved manner for a publisher proud of what it calls its “thoughtful” books.

Visitors to the IVP booth were given a piece of diamond jubilee birthday cake, but the focus was on the literary content on offer. “Our books kind of speak for themselves; that's what we want to promote,” said Publicity Manager Heather Mascarello.

One feature was the eight titles in the recently introduced “IVP Classics” line, including re-released titles by respected authors Francis Schaeffer, John Stott and Paul E. Little. “They have stood the test of time and been really good sellers,” Mascarello said. “We just wanted to freshen them up and present them to new readers that might not have heard of them before.”

Available to retailers for the first time at the show are the first titles in the new Likewise imprint focusing on twentysomethings. Christian George, whose Sacred Travels is one of the line's first releases, was due to be among guest authors at the IVP booth today.

IVP has announced plans for two titles in the summer that will challenge the arguments put forth in general market best-sellers The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins (Houghton Mifflin) and Misquoting Jesus by Bart D. Ehrman (HarperSanFrancisco). The new books will be The Dawkins Delusion by Alistair McGrath and Misquoting Truth by Timothy Paul Jones.

“IVP is known for its solid scholarship, and these (other) books are trying to refute Christianity. It seemed like we were the logical place to take this on and refute it,” Mascarello said.
