In the vein of TV medical dramas like ER and Grey’s Anatomy, Calvert's Critical Care is the story of Claire Avery, a former emergency room nurse-turned-hospital educator after her brother died of severe burns while she was on duty.
After being summoned to offer stress counseling to former colleagues, she encounters Logan Caldwell, a hardened ER director nicknamed “McSnarly” who is hiding a past full of hurt.  She also finds a friend in the feisty charge nurse, Erin, who wears her faith on her sleeve. When a co-worker falls apart, the two unlikely allies, Claire and Logan, are both forced to face their fears and failures to find healing of their past wounds and love for one another.

While some situations seem a bit contrived and the characters come across as somewhat idealized, the story flows well and keeps the reader’s attention, even with several of the characters’ stories explored.  Christianity is one of the central plot themes, and characters find not only psychological healing, but also spiritual renewal.
