Retailer sees ‘silver lining’ in roof collapse Print Email

A longtime, award-winning Christian store in Rochester, Minn., has rebounded after its roof collapsed, causing thousands of dollars in damage.

Customers, local businesses and well-wishers from as far away as England as well as CBA and vendors rallied around in support for Christian Book & Gift Shop--which saw a section of its roof fall Jan. 23, snapping a water pipe and flooding parts of the store.

Exclusive items are broadly popular among Christian retailers--as many as seven in 10 carry them--but not everyone agrees on their value or place in the Christian products market.

According to Christian Retailing's latest Vital Signs industry survey, books are the most popular exclusive product, according to our latest Vital Signs industry survey, followed by gifts, music and Bibles. Least popular are toys.

Larry Carpenter starts consulting firm Print Email

Christian publishing veteran Larry Carpenter, who has held senior positions with several leading suppliers, is starting his own business to help would-be authors and artists.

Having stepped down as president of Standard Publishing earlier this month after less than two years in charge, Carpenter has founded Christian Book Services (CBS). The company will offer consulting help covering everything from content creation to printing, marketing and distribution.

Author, speaker and purity promoter Dannah Gresh has criticized the parents of teen star Miley Cyrus for letting her film a provocative video for her new single, "Can't Be Tamed."

The founder of Pure Freedom ministry and author of the "Secret Keeper Girl" series from Moody Publishers and, more recently, Harvest House Publishers, Gresh said that she was "shocked" by Billy Ray and Tish Cyrus' apparent endorsement of the "highly sex-charged" performance by their teenage daughter, best known for her "Hannah Montana" series.

Expolit trade show kicks off Print Email

Participants from around the world converge on Miami starting today for Expolit 2010, where convention-goers will participate in the largest trade show in the U.S. for Spanish-language Christian products.

Retailers, publishers, distributors and music label representatives attend the convention, which is also open to the general public. Running through May 18 at the Doubletree Miami Mart, the show has a wide international reach, drawing exhibitors from all of Latin America, Spain, England and Japan.
