Zondervan posted "strong growth" in the financial year ended June 30, company officials have announced.

Citing "success on a variety of fronts," the news followed parent company HarperCollins' announcement last week of an increase in profits of $77 million in the previous 12 months.

Zondervan spokesperson Tara Powers said that the company's improvements were in part due to several fiction authors hitting the New York Times best-seller list, including Karen Kingsbury, Terri Blackstock and Tim LaHaye.

Nonfiction trade was fueled by "strong sales" of John Ortberg's The Me I Want to Be and Craig Groeschel's The Christian Atheist. "Zonderkidz saw significant growth and had numerous titles that dominated the industry best-seller lists throughout the year, Powers added.

"Our curriculum category grew by bringing on new authors such as Tim Keller, John and Stasi Eldredge, Gabe Lyons and Dallas Willard," she said. "Finally, our Bibles division saw year-over-year growth as well, due to the success of Lee Strobel's The Case for Christ Study Bible, among others.

Amish inspirational fiction has been spotlighted as "one of the fastest-growing genres in romance publishing."

USA Today focuses on the category in a 1,400-word report that notes how "in our sex-soaked society, nothing seems to inflame the imagination quite like the chaste." "It's a huge, huge, huge trend," said romance blogger Sarah Wendell, co-author of a book on romance fiction.

Exploring the popularity of Amish novels, English professor Pamela Regis, author of A Natural History of the Romance Novel, told the newspaper: "Simplicity is a hallmark of that community, and simplicity is powerful."

For many readers, the novels' appeal "is what they don't include-things like graphic violence and profanity," the report says. "A lot of people say, ‘I just want to get away to a place where it's quiet, where people are thoughtful and respect each other, where they go to bed when the sun goes down,' " commented Steve Oates, vice president of marketing at Bethany House, which publishes Beverly Lewis.

Christian retailers recognize the potential of the growing inspirational movie market--but may need to pay close attention to the titles they carry.

While a majority of store respondents in Christian Retailing's latest Vital Signs survey said that they believed shoppers would buy "B" quality films as long as there were strong Christian elements, far fewer consumers said they would be interested in lower-caliber films just because of their content.

Additionally, some retailers said they feared that the category may soon attract general market interest, as happened with Christian music and best-selling books.
