PlayingGodOctober was a month of awards for InterVarsity Press (IVP), with four books receiving honors from the Midwest Publishing Association (MPA). IVP designer David Fassett also received top honors from the Evangelical Christian Publishing Association (ECPA) for his work on Death Before the Fall.

MPA presented the awards to the four IVP books at its 63rd Midwest Publishing Book and Media Show on Oct. 16. IVP won the top award, the Award of Excellence, in the scholarly/reference category for the three-volume Encyclopedia of Ancient Christianity by General Editor Angelo Di Berardino; in the general trade category for Playing God by Andy Crouch; and in the school publishing category for Christianity and Developmental Psychopathologyby Editors Kelly S. Flanagan and Sarah E. Hall. In the special trade category, IVP won Honorable Mention for Coffee With Jesus by David Wilkie.

Dr. Dobson’s ‘Family Legacy’ simulcast sees big turnout Print Email

BuildingAFamilyLegacyHundreds of thousands of people worldwide saw the inaugural film in Dr. James Dobson’s “Building a Family Legacy” series during its simulcast world premiere. More than 7,000 churches and other groups simulcast Your Legacy, the first film in the series.

“This is the culmination of my life’s pursuit—helping parents build a family legacy of faith that will endure for generations,” Dobson said. “Despite what the media and popular culture claim, there is deep hunger for a family emphasis on faith and passing our values on to the next generation. The worldwide turnout for ‘Building a Family Legacy’ shows it.”

Matthew West song celebrates Royals, helps fan Print Email

TheMVPs-webWhen the Kansas City Royals baseball team became 2014's American League champions and headed to the World Series, Matthew West, a die-hard Royals fan, felt he just had to “do something” about it.

Parodying the hit song “Royals” by Lorde, West recorded his own version of the song by changing the lyrics to celebrate on behalf of Kansas City. The song immediately went viral and received exposure with the city’s television and radio stations.

Family Christian Stores plans World Vision celebration Print Email

OrphanSundayFamily Christian Stores is inviting customers to visit one of its stores Saturday, Nov. 1, for a World Vision celebration ahead of Orphan Sunday, Nov. 2.

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Family is partnering with World Vision for the celebration. There will be cake to eat and a coloring activity for children.

AAP: Religion publishers’ sales rise in July Print Email

AAPButtonLogo-webThe Association of American Publishers (AAP) StatShot report issued Tuesday shows that July sales were up 2.8% for religious presses with hardcover editions gaining the most over July 2013, rising 7.4%.

For the first seven months of the year, sales from religious presses were up 1.9% overall with e-books rising 25.7%. For the year-to-date period through July, hardcover sales were down 4.8%, and paperbacks were up 4.6%.

In the overall market, the children’s/YA category saw ongoing year-over-year increases across all book formats.

 
‘Same Kind of Different as Me’ begins filming Print Email

SameKindOfDifferent-web2Paramount Pictures has started production on the true story told in the New York Times best-selling book Same Kind of Different as Me: A Modern-Day Slave, an International Art Dealer, and the Unlikely Woman Who Bound Them Together (W Publishing Group, 2006). Academy Award nominees Greg Kinnear and Djimon Hounsou and Academy Award winners Renee Zellweger and Jon Voight will star in the film.

The full-length feature film marks the directorial debut of Michael Carney from a script he co-wrote with co-author Ron Hall and Alexander Foard. Mary Parent and Cale Boyter will produce the film through Disruption Entertainment, alongside Hall, Darren Moorman and Stephen Johnson. The executive producers are Foard, Carney, Chris Bancroft and Hans Graffunder.

The Milligan College Professional Excellence Award is bestowed upon individuals who have brought distinction to Milligan through professional achievement. Tipton became an award-winning author when her debut title, Diary of a Real Payne Book 1: True Story, won The Old Schoolhouse Magazine’s Blue Ribbon Award for Best Children’s Book for 2013.
