A Utah-based company that produces a DVD player that enables viewers "to enjoy all of the great Hollywood movies--without all of the junk" is looking to make the product available to more Christian and church retailers.

"ClearPlay began expanding into Christian retail stores about 18 months ago, and our product is now offered in over 400 stores nationwide," CEO Don Atkinson told Christian Retailing.

Besides Family Christian Stores, approximately a dozen church bookstores carry ClearPlay--which skips and mutes content based on 12 categories, including profanity, graphic violence and adult content, Atkinson noted. Available for thousands of movies, the video player utilizes downloadable filters, which are generally made available the same day a new DVD releases.

"Church bookstores are a new market for us," Atkinson said. "People find it very convenient to shop in their church bookstore on weekends. It is a very targeted audience. People shopping in church bookstores are interested in strengthening their families against the encroaching world.

"Our product provides them a great solution," he added. "By enabling them to block undesirable content, it brings back family movie night, without the apprehension of what might be showing up at any moment in the movie."

Founded by Matt Jarman in 2000, ClearPlay—which had a booth last month at Christian Retailing's The Gathering 2010 at Southeast Christian Church in Louisville, Ky.—will exhibit at the International Christian Retail Show in St. Louis in June.

"We were at the CBA show last year for the first time," Atkinson said. "We will be there this year as well. We will be having six drawings that allow six people to win a free ClearPlay DVD player. It includes a free six-month membership as well. They will have access to all our movie filters for six months."

A ClearPlay DVD player was released recently in France, he added. "We have provided ClearPlay to around 50,000 people across the (U.S.)," Atkinson said. "Our plans are to continue to work to provide families the control over what they see and hear when they watch a movie at home on DVD."
