Christian Small Publisher book award winners emerge from ‘competitive’ slate Print Email

CSPA-webThe results are in for the 2014 Christian Small Publisher Book of the Year Awards, with 14 books being honored in 12 categories. Sponsored by the Christian Small Publisher Association (CSPA), the awards honor books produced by small publishers each year for outstanding contribution to Christian life.

“This year the voting was very competitive,” CSPA Director Sarah Bolme said. “Two categories had ties for first place—a first for the Book of the Year Award.”

Three California gift shows co-host largest gift market in West Print Email

As part of the unified message, the three venues will honor each other’s admission badges and provide free shuttle service between each location and host hotels.

The Isaacs clean up at Absolutely Gospel Music Awards Print Email

AbsolutelyGospelThe Isaacs won five awards at the 2014 Absolutely Gospel Music (AGM) Awards, the most of any group or individual. The awards were presented April 15 at a concert celebration in Smyrna, Tenn.

The group was awarded its second consecutive Mixed Group of the Year title and first-ever Best Live Performer. Ben Isaacs took home Producer of the Year (Artist) while songwriting siblings Becky Isaacs Bowman and Sonya Isaacs won Songwriter of the Year (Artist). Bowman was also recognized as Musician of the Year.

James Dobson wins Obamacare contraceptive battle Print Email

JamesDobson-webDr. James Dobson and his Family Talk radio ministry have won a preliminary injunction blocking enforcement of the Obamacare employer mandate. Fighting the same contraception-coverage requirements that Hobby Lobby is protesting before the Supreme Court, Dobson and his organization won the injunction before the United States District Court of Colorado, where Family Talk is headquartered.

“In America, we don’t try to separate what people do from what they believe,” Kevin Theriot, senior counsel for Alliance Defending Freedom, said of the case. “Faith-based organizations should be free to operate according to the faith they teach and live out every day.”

Baker titles lead Christy Awards nominations Print Email

ChristyAwardLogoBaker Publishing Group books received 10 Christy Awards nominations, the most of any publisher. The 15th Annual Christy Awards, which honor excellence in Christian fiction, will be presented June 23 at the International Christian Retail Show in Atlanta.

Tyndale House Publishers books also fared well, receiving four nominations, while Thomas Nelson and Zondervan titles also scored a combined four nods for HarperCollins Christian Publishing.

‘Heaven’ opening weekend proves faith-based films are for real Print Email

HeavenIsForRealMoviePoster-webHeaven Is for Real earned $21.5 million at the box office opening weekend, giving it the highest debut and the third-highest take April 18-20. The film released two days before the weekend, and adding Wednesday and Thursday’s take brings sales through the weekend to $28.5 million, according to Box Office Mojo.

Averaging $8,895 across 2,417 theaters during the weekend, Heaven Is for Real had nearly twice the take of the Johnny Depp-starring Transcendence, which only grossed $11.15 million, despite playing in more than 1,000 additional screens than Heaven.
