Supreme Court hears Hobby Lobby contraception case Print Email

HobbyLobbySupreme Court justices heard oral arguments Tuesday in Sebelius v. Hobby Lobby Stores. The historic Obamacare case addresses the rights of business owners to operate their family companies without violating their religious convictions.

The court combined the hearing of two similar cases of family-owned companies, Hobby Lobby and Conestoga Wood Specialties, who both challenged the Health & Human Services (HHS) Mandate that would force them to pay for abortion pills or face substantial daily fines.

The Duck Commander brand and Robertson family are partnering with Tyndale to bring their promise of faith, family and fun to stories for adult and youth fiction readers. 

A Robertson Family Christmas ($19.99) is a holiday novella about a troubled young man who is surprised to win a contest giving him the opportunity to join the Robertsons for Christmas. Although he’s uninitiated and initially resistant to the “Robertson holiday way,” he ultimately finds hope, love and acceptance in their faith-filled environment. Miss Kay Robertson and Korie Robertson are teaming with Travis Thrasher to bring this story to life.

Star-studded ‘Son of God’ tour launches at Saddleback Church Print Email

SonOfGodMoviePoster-webWord Entertainment and LightWorkers Media launched The Bible: Son of God Tour 2014 at Rick Warren’s Saddleback Church in Southern California. GRAMMY-nominated artists Francesca Battistelli and Natalie Grant, as well as Sidewalk Prophets, Chris August, Meredith Andrews and Jason Gray, played before a packed crowd with more than 2,000 in attendance, including producer Mark Burnett, actress/producer Roma Downey, Warren and Word Entertainment President and CEO Rod Riley.

The two-hour live event was also hosted at churches in Phoenix; Albuquerque, N.M.; and Denver in the following days. The tour will run an additional 13 dates nationwide through April 13.

Hobby Lobby gets day in Supreme Court Print Email

HobbyLobbyThe battle between the Hobby Lobby arts and crafts chain and the Obamacare employer mandate reaches the U.S. Supreme Court tomorrow.

“It has major significance for religious liberty” and “for what constitutional rights business owners can claim,” said Joshua Hawley, a lawyer for Hobby Lobby’s legal team, The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty.

‘God’s Not Dead’ opens to record box-office returns Print Email

GodsNotDeadPosterGod’s Not Dead (Pure Flix Entertainment) opened to estimated sales of nearly $8.6 million across 780 theaters this weekend. This is the top-grossing performance ever by a faith-based film opening in less than 1,000 theaters.

This is the seventh-largest opening weekend of all time for a faith-based film, behind only The Passion of The Christ, the three “Chronicles of Narnia” films, Son of God and Courageous, according to Box Office Mojo. Only Passion, The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe and Prince Caspian outgrossed God’s Not Dead on a per-screen basis, and the Pure Flix film joins them as the only four faith-based movies to gross more than $10,000 per theater with an opening weekend of more than 32 screens.

United Methodist Publishing House contracts for office building Print Email

UMPHlogo2The United Methodist Publishing House (UMPH) has a contract on LakeFront Office Park, a building in Nashville’s MetroCenter, according to a report by The Tennessean. The property under contract had been owned by Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams, who died last October.

If the deal closes, the denomination’s publishing arm expects to renovate the 125,000-square-foot office building, the newspaper reported. UMPH plans to buy the 10.5 acres on which the building sits.

Family Christian manager charged with store theft Print Email

ChristopherBerner-webPolice arrested a manager at a Family Christian for the theft of approximately $3,000 from the Chain’s Boardman, Ohio, store. Christopher Berner is charged with fifth-degree felony theft.

Police arrested Berner on March 11 after a six-month loss-prevention investigation into the theft, according to Youngstown, Ohio-based newspaper The Vindicator.
