Church bookstores are ‘God’s stopgap’ Print Email

Church bookstores have a critical role to play as the Christian products industry goes through a "seismic shift," according to church bookstore movement leader Geni Hulsey.

Pointing to online shopping and big box stores carrying Christian resources, Hulsey said that "the competition is just different than it was 20 years ago, and the industry, I believe, is trying to reinvent itself," when interviewed on Bridge-Logos Foundation's "We're Talking Books" blog radio show last week.

Hachette’s record-breaking year Print Email

Hachette Book Group USA had double-digit sales growth last year, according to financial reports released last week by its parent company, French media conglomerate Lagardère.

Hachette's total earnings before interest and taxes in 2009 increased 24% to approximately $455 million, company officials said. Besides the success of Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" saga, several other titles--including William P. Young's The Shack--were cited in contributing to the growth. Published by Windblown Media, The Shack has sold more than 10 million copies via all retail channels since its release in May 2007.

Global organization for Christian products proposed Print Email

A longtime industry leader has proposed the founding of a new global organization to better serve the changing Christian products world.

Doug Ross, president emeritus of the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association (ECPA), has suggested that a group called the International Association of Christian Communicators (IACC) be launched to bring together existing organizations.

Retailer ‘outraged’ over ‘Blind Side’ distribution Print Email

A Christian retailer has expressed "outrage" over the DVD release of The Blind Side--the blockbuster inspirational film starring Sandra Bullock, who won the Best Actress Oscar for the film earlier this month.

Gerald Hicks, co-owner of Perfect Peace Christian Lifestyle Stores in Wichita, Kan., says he is unhappy because Word Distribution is distributing the film to the Christian retail channel only through Family Christian Stores (FCS)--and not via other chains or independent Christian bookstores. Word Distribution officials declined to comment.

‘Hachi’ coming to Christian retail Print Email

Hachi: A Dog's Tale will be released on DVD March 23 from Affirm Films--a unit of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment--and distributed to Christian retail by Provident-Integrity Distribution.

Directed by Lasse Hallstrom, the movie stars Richard Gere as Parker Wilson, a distinguished scholar who finds a lost Akita puppy at a train station on his way home from work. Despite initial objections from Wilson's wife, Cate (Joan Allen), Hachi endears himself to the Wilson family and grows to be the professor's loyal companion.
