LifeWay honors university president with ‘extremely rare’ award Print Email

DavidSDockeryLifeWay Christian Resources has given its esteemed Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB) Award to Union University President David S. Dockery. Sept. 13. The award is the highest honor that LifeWay confers, according to a statement from the university.

LifeWay President Thom Rainer called the recognition “extremely rare” in his announcement of the award Sept. 13 at Union’s G.M. Savage Memorial Chapel. Only one other HCSB Award has been bestowed, which was given posthumously to pastor Fred Winters, who was shot and killed during a worship service at his Maryville, Ill., church.

Duck Commander books take three ‘New York Times’ spots Print Email

Si-Cology-webHoward Books’ Duck Commander titles now occupy three spots on the New York Times Hardcover Nonfiction list, including the placement of Si-cology 1 at No. 1 its first time on the list.

Happy, Happy, Happy by Duck Commander patriarch Phil Robertson falls in at No. 3, while The Duck Commander Family by Willie and Korie Robertson sits at No. 9 on the Sept. 22 list, tracking sales for the week ending Sept. 7. 

Howard Books announced earlier this month that the three books the publishing house has released from the Phil Robertson family—stars of the hit A&E reality show Duck Dynasty—each have more than 1 million copies in print.

You’ll Get Through This is a message for the times,” said David Moberg, senior vice president and group publisher of books for HarperCollins Christian Publishing. “This is a season when people need hope, and no one is better suited to bring that message in a creative and dynamic way than Max.”

‘Not a Fan’ creator to expand into feature films Print Email

CityOnAHill-300City on a Hill Studio has created a new Theatrical Films and Church Engagement division to lead its expansion into feature films and to head its direct-to-church business. Known for developing cinematic, story-driven media resources for ministry, the studio produced Kyle Idleman’s best-selling small group studies Not a Fan and Gods at War.

Industry veteran Marc Harper will lead the new division. Harper will shepherd projects through theatrical and/or DVD release and church movie event licensing. He will also direct City on a Hill Studio’s church engagement business, assisting churches worldwide in implementing sermon series, church movie events, small group studies and other church-wide and outreach events. Harper’s recent background includes three years as general manager of Outreach Inc.’s films division, working with studios and national ministries to release of faith-based movies like Fireproof, Courageous and Soul Surfer.

Lisa Wingate’s ‘Prayer Box’ novel travels the country Print Email

ThePrayerBoxBest-selling author Lisa Wingate’s The Prayer Box has traveled across the country ahead of its Sept. 1 release. Seventeen early copies of the Tyndale House Publishers novel have been part of a promotion dubbed “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Book.”

Winners were chosen from contest entrants to become early readers of the novel. Participants were arranged in special “Sister Circles,” each of which shared one copy of the book that traveled by mail. Members of the Sister Circles snapped photos of their favorite reading spots while they “owned” the book and jotted their thoughts in the margins, leaving a trail of reactions, personal epiphanies and memories triggered by the story.

‘The Ultimate Life’ outshines previous film in director’s ‘best work’ Print Email

TheUltimateLifeMoviePosterReelWorks Studios’ latest film, The Ultimate Life, earned nearly $660,000 on its opening weekend, according to Box Office Mojo.  The $1,602-per-screen average across 412 screens surpasses the performance of the original film in the series, The Ultimate Gift.

“With a solid opening weekend and high viewer ratings, we believe The Ultimate Life will continue the success of the first film in the series, which has continued to do remarkable business worldwide,” said producer Rick Eldridge.

MandisaOvercomerThree-time GRAMMY-nominee Mandisa will be a featured guest on the brand-new set of FOX & Friends Monday, Sept. 16.  Her appearance on the top-rated cable news show will coincide with Elizabeth Hasselbeck’s first day as a co-host.

Mandisa's Aug. 27 release, Overcomer, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Christian Albums chart. Following last week's chart entry, Mandisa saw digital sales for her No. 1 single “Overcomer” soar following the Sept. 5 world premiere of the music video on ABC's Good Morning America. The video has since been featured on several other media outlets, including TIME.com.
