CBA's board of directors added two new members and confirmed an appointed representative earlier this month to bring "a strong focus on brick-and-mortar retailing and the industry's simultaneous transition into digital business."

CBA members elected Vicki Geist, co-owner of Cedar Springs Christian Stores in Knoxville, Tenn., as director representing independent retailers with annual sales of more than $750,000, and David Dickinson, owner of Christian Gifts Place in Wilton, Conn., as director representing independent retailers with annual sales of less that amount. Dickinson, who was appointed to fill a vacated seat, will serve his first elected term.

DaySpring Senior Vice President of Commercialization Bill Couey was elected as gift and specialty director. Each of the three will serve three-year terms beginning Oct. 1.

"God has orchestrated an incredible group of board members for 'such a time as this,' " said Sue Smith, general manager of Baker Book House in Grand Rapids, Mich., who takes over as CBA board chairman for George Thomsen, whose term ends Sept. 30. "The governance and leadership of the CBA industry will require keen strategic planning and innovation as we move forward in redefining who we are. A snapshot of these dedicated directors will reveal proven business success, a commitment to represent and serve on members' behalf, and a wholehearted passion to see this industry thrive."

CBA President Curtis Riskey said the association's board "purposely and untypically represents all industry segments because of the common mission of Christian resources."

"We want to be sure that individuals are heard, and that there is diversity at the table," Riskey said. "This gives CBA great input to lead and advocate for the Christian products industry."

Geist is a second-generation co-owner of Cedar Springs Christian Stores, which was founded by her father, Curtis McGinnis, who continues to help in the business. Her brother, Link McGinnis, is also co-owner.

"I want CBA to continue to help independent stores," Geist said. "I have been an independent retailer for over 35 years and that is where my heart is. I would also like to see suppliers more actively involved to help independents survive in this new retail environment."

Dickinson, who opened his store seven years ago, has more than 20 years of corporate experience and 10 years in management consulting with Fortune 100 companies. He has been instrumental in CBA's new strategic planning initiatives, providing insights into digital transformations in publishing and retailing. Currently, he is consulting on a mobile marketing project.

Couey leads DaySpring's product marketing, design, supply chain and distribution teams. He said CBA must look into the future to bring a voice for change to Christian retailing, identifying approaches and resources to grow and develop.

"It's about how Christian retail can thrive in a challenging, changing consumer-retail marketplace," Couey said. "The need for products that bring the hope, joy and life-saving message of Jesus to people is greater than ever. People need the products that Christian retailers provide, and I want to help do that in any way. People need Jesus like never before."

Women of Faith, the nation's largest live event for Christian women, will host a new, in-depth Bible study event early next year.

To be held Feb. 21-22 at Lakewood Church in Houston, "Unwrap the Bible" will feature well-known Bible teachers and authors Beth Moore, Christine Caine, Priscilla Shirer, Sheila Walsh and Lisa Harper together on one platform for the first time. The two-day event—which is expected to draw thousands of women from across the country— will be devoted to studying and applying God's Word, while providing hope and help.

"This gathering is a dream come true for me," said Caine, author of Undaunted (Zondervan) and founder of A21, an organization seeking to abolish injustice. "This is a new day full of passion, purpose, unity, faith, hope and love. We have prayed, planned and prepared, and are expecting Jesus to do great things in our midst."

Brenda Harrison, co-owner of Lighthouse Christian Bookstore in Bedford, Ind., told Christian Retailing that she "loves the theme" of the event.

"The Bible is full of some incredible treasures for us to uncover, and this event

will be encouraging women to do just that," Harrison said. "It sounds awesome. I love the idea of encouraging people to get into God's Word."

Lorraine Valk, co-owner of Parable Christian Store of St. Joseph in St. Joseph, Mich., agreed.

"Anything that gets people engaged in studying their Bible is great," Valk said. "For Christian retailers, I think making a large display and alerting local churches to plug into this event through promoting study groups in their own churches would be phenomenal."

Since 2000, Women of Faith has been a division of Thomas Nelson. To learn more about the event, visit www.womenoffaith.com.

Vision Video is sponsoring Churches Making Movies' (CMM) inaugural Christian Film Festival this fall.

"The film festival represents a great showcase of church-produced films that are consistent with our calling to provide video resources that would allow families and churches to have an historic awareness of how God has worked among his people over the centuries," said Vision Video General Manager Bill Curtis.

To be held Oct. 11-13 primarily at the Holiday Inn in Clark, N.J., the festival will screen five world premieres from the country's best church-produced films, and offer networking and professional development for church-based filmmakers.

"We're excited to have Vision Video on board as one of our official sponsors," said LaVonne McIver James, the festival's director. "It is companies like this that help empower the church-based film movement and make the festival possible."

Vision Video is one of the largest distributors of Christian DVDs, with more than 2,000 titles.

"Churches that make movies are a part of a cultural movement of churches harnessing the power of films to impact culture," CMM officials said. "This culture-impacting movement is fueled by pastors, Christian organizations and media-producing ministries using faithful filmmaking to transform hearts and minds."

World magazine has recognized Bruce Strom, author of Gospel Justice (Moody Publishers), and his free legal clinic Administer Justice in Elgin, Ill., as the Midwest recipient of the publication's Hope Award for Effective Compassion.

"Moody Publishers is delighted to congratulate Bruce Strom and Administer Justice on this esteemed award, and to join in celebrating the tireless and fruitful contributions of Administer Justice to its community for the sake of the gospel," Moody officials said.

Nominated by World readers, Hope Award recipients are poverty-fighting, local ministries, which are explicitly Christian and dependent on donations, while offering personal and spiritual help.

World chose Strom and his ministry "because they are an example of what is being done to help the poor by providing free legal assistance."

"They're not a big operation that demands huge resources," the magazine said. "The work they do is very hard, yet simple enough that others could go and do likewise."

Administer Justice will receive $4,000 cash as a recipient of the award. In October, World readers can also vote online for Administer Justice to receive an additional $25,000 cash as the national winner of the Hope Award for Effective Compassion.

John Eckhardt's "Prayers for Spiritual Battle" series (Charisma House) has topped more than 1 million units sold. The series shows readers how to gain victory over stubborn demons and strongholds.

"We are honored to publish books with such spiritual depth and mass appeal," said Tessie DeVore, executive vice president of Charisma House Book Group. "Apostle John Eckhardt's message is for such a time as this. We will continue to work to see more lives changed by his indispensable teaching on the power of prayer."

The first title in the six-book series, Prayers That Rout Demons, became a best-seller after its release in December 2007. Prayers That Break Curses was released in 2009, followed by Prayers That Bring Healing (2010), Prayers That Release Heaven on Earth (2010), Prayers That Activate Blessings (2011) and Prayers That Move Mountains (2012).
