The Generous Mr. Lovewell by MercyMe (INO Records/Provident-Integrity Distribution) continued to hold the top spot of the SoundScan's Christian/gospel music Christian retail chart for sales the week ending June 2, while Flywheel (Provident Films/Provident-Integrity) remained atop the Christian Videos list.

DVD creator defends 'big bang' reference Print Email

VeggieTales co-creator Phil Vischer has defended his major new children's Bible series from criticisms that it includes an "anti-Christian" reference.

Vischer addressed the concerns in blog postings following the launch of the first installments of the 13-part "What's in the Bible?" DVD series from Tyndale House Publishers.

Coaching legend, author John Wooden dies Print Email

College basketball coaching legend John Wooden, who wrote several Christian books, died from natural causes June 4. Wooden, who had been hospitalized for dehydration at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles since May 26, was 99, the Associated Press (AP) reported.

Wooden, who led his UCLA basketball team to an unsurpassed record of 10 national championships in the 1960s and '70s, was "a mild-mannered leader who instilled a quiet discipline in his players, emphasizing group effort over individual heroics," said the AP. His favorite part of coaching was leading the practice sessions in which he taught the fundamentals that were the foundation of his success, the AP reported.

Abingdon title tops Amazon Kindle list Print Email

A Christian title has topped Amazon's free Kindle titles best-sellers list, which is updated hourly. An Abingdon Press novel, They Almost Always Come Home by Cynthia Ruchti, which released in April, headed the free list at press time.

Other Christian publishers are represented on the free list, but with 2009 titles. Baker Publishing Group's No Place for a Lady (Revell), a Western by Maggie Brendan, came in at No. 3, while Zondervan's Treason by Don Brown is at No. 4.

Christian music pioneer Dana Key mourned Print Email

Christian music industry observers are expressing sadness upon hearing of the death of pioneer Dana Key, who with Eddie DeGarmo formed the first Christian group with a video broadcast on MTV.

Twitter and blog postings reported that Key died yesterday, although his label, Ardent Records, could not confirm details of his death at press time.

Kim Pettit promoted to CTAI's chief operating officer Print Email

Christian Trade Association International (CTAI) has promoted Kim Pettit from director to chief operating officer.

Pettit joined CTAI last September and immediately traveled to Hong Kong to serve at the Marketsquare Asia convention. Since then, Pettit has taken on an increased work load and is now responsible for all of CTAI's major programs.

CTAI President Jim Powell said Pettit deserved "a higher level of responsibility within the organization." "In the time she has been with Christian Trade, she has exhibited passion, commitment, and expertise that commend her to this larger role," said Powell, who will continue to serve as president, but with a reduced portfolio. "

Sylvester Ejeh, CTAI's chairman of board of directors, added that Pettit "has impressed the board with her contribution. We look forward to the positive ways she will influence Christian Trade going forward."

 
Nelson expands children’s and gift products staff Print Email

Thomas Nelson has made several changes to its children's and gift products staff.

Jennifer Deshler will move from her current role as Nelson's senior director of marketing of the fiction group to serve as vice president of marketing and publishing process for the children's and gift division. In her new position, Deshler will be responsible for leading marketing efforts for children's and gift products, streamlining processes from idea to market and making sure promotional efforts yield results.

"Authors and colleagues alike love working with Jennifer because she brings excellence in creativity, implementation and analysis to every project," said Laura Minchew, vice president and publisher of Nelson's children's and gift products.

Additionally, Molly Kempf, who was previously senior editor at Scholastic, will joining the children's and gift products division as editorial director. Minchew said Kempf's "experience working with top licenses, movie tie-ins and children's fiction will be a huge asset for our team."

Meanwhile, Mackenzie Howard has been promoted from children's editor to acquisitions editor for children's and gift books. In her new position, Howard will develop frontlist and backlist strategy, lead children's book acquisition and assist with gift book acquisitions.

Minchew said Howard "is a shining star at Nelson. She has a great eye for projects that will appeal to customers of all ages. I know she will excel in this new role."
