Running the Bell Tower Christian Gift & Bookstore in Brooklyn, New York City, is an unusual balancing act-serving the needs of a large congregation and at the same time providing a service to a major general population.

The 4,500-square-foot store at the famed Brooklyn Tabernacle is the only Christian retail outlet of any size in the borough and as such draws a lot of shoppers from its surrounding area, which includes a big shopping district with a nearby Macy's and a large business district.

Independent retail support leader Kirk Blank has offered a five-point message of encouragement to stores looking to grow their business and impact in people's lives.

Looking back on more than 20 years in the industry, the president of Munce Group says that while economic challenges, consolidation and competition have taken their toll on chains and independents, "those same challenges have provided opportunities for growth for some independent stores."

Regal Books plans an early release for a book about coaching legend John Wooden, who died of natural causes June 4 at age 99.

Originally scheduled for the fall, The Greatest Coach Ever: Timeless Wisdom and Insights of John Wooden will be published next month.

Dan Balow resigns as Oasis Audio publisher Print Email

Oasis Audio Publisher Dan Balow has announced his resignation to pursue other opportunities, effective June 18. Industry veteran and current Oasis Audio New Business Development Director Tammy Faxel has been named publisher and sales director, company officials said.

Balow could not be reached to comment on details of his resignation. David Morris, owner of Oasis Audio, said Balow "has made a significant contribution to not only Oasis, but to the audio industry as a whole." "We've appreciated and benefited from his leadership, and wish him well in his future endeavors," Morris added.

NavPress has hired Tom Lathrop as marketing manager, who will develop plans to promote key titles to the Christian retail channel and direct markets as well as be involved with project management.

Before joining NavPress, Lathrop was with Word Distribution, where he served for 11 years. He also has more than 19 years of experience working in and with the Christian retail industry.

Julie Langmade, NavPress director of marketing, said Lathrop's "background in retail sales and his attention to detail will be a great enhancement to our current marketing team."
